SarahD Â Â 10 #1 Posted June 14, 2010 I was thinking the other day about having a back up plan if the writing doesn't take off. So it would be great to get a bit of experience in the field to maybe kick start a career in the book world. I'd love to get a bit of experience in copywriting, editing or publishing. Are there any companies around in Sheffield? Anyone got any tips?
 Share this content via...
CLWalsh   10 #2 Posted June 15, 2010 Hi there  There are a few volunteering opportunities that you might be interested in...  1. Sheffield Centre for Independent Living need volunteers to help research and produce their information leaflets: http://www.inclusivesheffield.org.uk/  3. "This is a varied role in which you provide admin support, handle inquiries, help prepare documents such as reports, articles and press releases. Also collect contact information into a database and establish a library for public access" http://new.solar-active.com/  All of these opportunities and others are on http://www.do-it.org  Hope you find something you enjoy! SarahD Â Â 10 #5 Posted June 21, 2010 Unfortunately I'm not hearing back from them, but at least you gave me some ideas!
 Share this content via...
CLWalsh   10 #6 Posted June 22, 2010 Some of these charities are very stretched, so it can take them a little time to respond to people. If you've still not heard in a couple of weeks, try giving them a call. Otherwise, find some other charities that look interesting and offer your services (they may not be advertising but might jump at the chance of using your skills when you put the idea to them)! Orwin   10 #7 Posted June 22, 2010 Voluntary Action Sheffield is a wealth of knowledge about who's looking for what in the local voluntary/charitable sector. They're at The Circle in Rockingham Lane off Division Street and have a really good website.
 Share this content via...
SarahD Â Â 10 #8 Posted June 24, 2010 I will pursue the charity work but I was kind of hoping to be able to volunteer with a company who can show you more about publishing and everything that goes along with it. Almost like work experience. Do people do this?
 Share this content via...
Orwin   10 #9 Posted June 25, 2010 That, I'm afraid, I don't know.
 Share this content via...
Peacock Lady   10 #10 Posted June 27, 2010 Several of the big publishers, and a few literary agents, run intern schemes: some are for a week or two, some for a month or two: most are unpaid, and the only ones I know of are in London.  Competition for the limited places available is tough: you'll need a good degree and some experience (perhaps working for your University's press, or on a literary magazine). Applications for next summer (that is, 2011) are now being taken.
 Share this content via...
