Trout_Basher   10 #37 Posted June 1, 2010 The most sensible answer to the antagonist's is " Why not get the car's off e bay ??" nutters...
 Share this content via...
donuticus   10 #38 Posted June 1, 2010 I think you're all forgetting that a brand new car is not ALWAYS reliable, regardless of age, you get cars that go on for hundreds of thousands of miles, without any major problems, yet others will break down 2 months after they come out the showroom.  If you bought ten brand new focuses and ten five year old focuses I think the reliabillity of the second hand ones would be worse than the brand new ones over the course of the same amount of mileage. Tomm06 Â Â 12 #39 Posted June 1, 2010 If you bought ten brand new focuses and ten five year old focuses I think the reliabillity of the second hand ones would be worse than the brand new ones over the course of the same amount of mileage. I would challenge you on this. If you buy 10 brand new Focus's and 10 very well maintained Focus's all 20 cars will run just fine for as long as you need them too. Remember, look after your car, and your car will look after you. As Clarkson said when reviewing the new ST Â '' Is it reliable? all I can say is I have a Y reg Focus at home, and it's NEVER gone wrong once'' Â Unfortunate for you, you've chosen the Focus as an example which as cars, are well known for their outstandin reliability and drive. youwhatref   10 #40 Posted June 1, 2010 Probably been raised before, but I am keen to hear your thoughts. I have just watched a clip on the Sheffield Star website about a lady involved in a bus crash. Basically, the clips showed the police had cordened off the area. What I want to know is; why do they have to spend so much money? There were three Volvo S80's and a Range Rover all very new, just sat at either end of the road to stop traffic! I got pulled over the other day for no insurance (which was a mix up by the way, I did have insurance, they sent me on my way!) However, before they did, two brand new ford focuses and two Volvo S80's had turned up. I drive a clapped out ford escort, they could have pulled me up using a mobility scooter.  You probably saw three Volvo's as it was possibly a serious traffic collision. The Volvo's are often used by traffic mobiles, the Focus's generally used by the local officers. The Focus's used are the basic diesel type so not so costly. The police run them into the ground! Traffic obvsiouly spend more on their cars i'd guess for obvious reasons.
 Share this content via...
PinkJo   10 #41 Posted June 1, 2010 In response to the OPs question, the volvos belong to the traffic dept, who were dealing with this, whereas the focus beat cars will have been dealing with crimes and other incidents. If a response officer has been dealing, they would have blocked the road with the focus.
 Share this content via...
andyrad29 Â Â 10 #42 Posted June 2, 2010 A bmw with full service history is in my opinion more reliable than a brand new suzuki swift? Â the police dont use Swifts tho do they?
 Share this content via...

Paul2412 Â Â 10 #44 Posted June 2, 2010 I have just shown this post to a friend of mine who I go fishing with (just happens he is a south yorkshire copper) his word's were " no matter what we do to protect the people there will allways be someone out there that knows how to do the job better than we do" I tend to agree with him. I would rather the police have up to date cars that are proved reliable than enter into a lottery by supplying cheaper vehicles and putting our safety at risk. Â Probably the most sensible post of the thread.
 Share this content via...
llamatron   10 #45 Posted June 2, 2010 Who's to say a second hand car will have high mileage? 100000 miles in an m5 is nothing? Also, how about what i said about used s80's? They're good for 200000 miles if well maintained so why not buy them at 100000miles? I think some people on here are making judgements with very little knowledge about the reliability of cars! No wonder the scrappage sheme was so successful, I reckon it was the forummers buying the brand new kia rio's for only 10995! WOW!  how do you propose they buy them? Would there be an office of people looking on auto trader for good deals?
 Share this content via...
Treatment   10 #46 Posted June 2, 2010 They should scrap the current cars and replace all Police cars with the Evo's and Scoobys, chip them, and get them tuned, no one will ever run from the Police again  I think that those with a Nissan GTR might. Tomm06 Â Â 12 #47 Posted June 2, 2010 I think that those with a Nissan GTR might. Â Hmmm arguable. Tuned Evo's and Scoobys would definatly give it a good run for it's money.
 Share this content via...
practiceshef   10 #48 Posted June 2, 2010 Tomm06 seems to be the only person who takes an interest in cars. As for autotrader, you narrow down your search so it only takes literally two minutes to look. Knowing our police force though, we would probably have an office full doing that job- Bit like driving brand new s80's when second hands ones will be fine
 Share this content via...
