Sainsburys buying Fletchers land to build new store - Wadsley Bridge

Recommended Posts

I think you might be right, huge investment, we went at tea time on a Friday a couple of weeks ago and it was very quiet.

i can't believe how quiet it is too. i overhead people discussing with the person at the bakery counter last week and they were saying it was dead the whole time.

how long do they leave a massive shop like this to break even? i really really hope they don't abandon it too soon - it would be the absolute death of the area (retail park shops) if it fails :'( and don't get me wrong - independent shops would be great but it will damage the area's rep if this goes down quickly.

I was quite surprised when they built a Sainsburys there. It doesn't seem the right location for their target market. I don't intend to sound a snob when making this statement, Sainsburys just seems more suited to an area in South West Sheffield... But I'm sure they've done their homework.

Certainly not the cheapest supermarket and doesn't aim to be but I think it may well struggle....

Been a few times not that busy which makes it a pleasure to shop! Don't think it's that much more to shop there either, Don't tell everyone but maybe because not a lot of shoppers, have lots of stuff reduced ie getting near sell by date, picked up some right bargain buys ie meats etc some a third of the price ! So shhh! Keep it to yourself!:)

Can't say I have been in it yet but it's always looked empty when I have gone past. Might have to pop in this week if Sainsbury's are doing any offers on alcohol.

Apparently my football team have a rather interesting game on Saturday in London and I've got a ticket

I went there a few weeks ago and I liked the store, but considering I live in Hillsborough it took way too long to get there and back. Traffic is a nightmare on Penistone road at the moment so I stay away from the whole area.

But i agree whoever did the marketing for having a sainsburys there should have been shot. There is far too much competition up there. Most shoppers are loyal to Asda and Morrisons. Then u have Aldi, Lidl and a Netto. Its saturated.

Compared to the local competition Sainsburies is by far the most expensive. If you were one of those people after exotic or specialist items (& usually shop at Waitrose) then that isn't a problem. But nobody in Hillsborough is daft enough to buy expensive Sainsburies tinned tomatoes when down the road they can buy just as good cheaper tinned tomatoes from Aldi.

I went to the little Sainsburies in Nether Edge and found a loaf of Warbies toastie was £1.45, so i went to the little tesco at the other end of Sheldon rd and bought the same thing for 95p. It's £1 in the little Morrisons too.

I don't know if anybody else has picked up on this but recently there seems to be a big push on the North end of sheffield. Ie. First the building of the Retail Park which that has certainly been abit of a white elephant. Then the building of the Asda at Chauser and the redevelopment of the buildings at the bottom of Herries Road Screwfix etc. Now the building of Sainsburys, its as though Sheffield City Council have a drive to try and lift that end of the City but how much have they made £££££ out of it?????

Why would the council make money out of it - apart from the additional business rates?

The income from the sale of Chaucer playing fields to Asda was spent on improvements to the school. All the other developments were private sector money on private sector sites AFAIK.
