Did you have a school hymn?

Recommended Posts

We didnt have a school hymn but we had a school prayer and motto

(St.Pauls Granville Rd)

St Paul glorious Apostle and Martyr and our most holy patron inspire us with

your devotion and courage may we share your love of God and like you remain

true to the faith all the days of our lives , Amen.

Motto: Fidem Servavi ( I have kept the Faith )

I think the statue of St Paul is still on the front of the building ,although it is

now A

Chaucer decided to have the hymn " to be a pilgrim" for some reason and I still remember all the words.

This was between 1966 and 1973

I remember that!

I also remember Mr Crowe singing `To be a pillock` in assembly.

Herdings Junior school had the motto "and with joy we'll persevere", which was carved into a piece of oak that was hung up in the assembly hall. I suppose that would make the school song "Jesus, good above all other". When we sang the final line, we were expected to turn and face the wooden plaque.

Jesus, good above all other,

gentle Child of gentle Mother,

in a stable born our Redeemer,

give us grace to persevere.

Jesus, cradled in a manger,

for us facing every danger,

living as a homeless stranger,

make we thee our King most dear.

Jesus, for thy people dying,

risen Master, death defying,

Lord in heaven, thy grace supplying,

keep us to thy presence near.

Jesus, who our sorrows bearest,

all our thoughts and hopes thou sharest,

thou to man the truth declarest;

help us all thy truth to hear.

Lord, in all our doings guide us;

pride and hate shall never divide us;

we'll go on with thee beside us,

and with joy we'll persevere!

De La Salle College

“And not in prowess fabled,

Of old and far away.

But here and now in battle

Of ardent work and play

Up College bravely plying

Like men of sterling mould

With valour still keep flying

Our star-lit Green and Gold”

Pretentious? You decide

If you want to know the rest, the landlord at “Fagin’s” will give it you

And this is King Ted's:

..Tempus est ut concinamus, quicquid Edwardensium,

..nunc adestis: hoc sit omnis thema nostri carminis:

..qualis est qui cuique nostrum semper aemulandus est?

..Ille verus Edwardensis, quisquis humani nihil

..a sese alienum putabit, usque consors ceteris

..sive gaudebunt secundis seu laborabunt malis.

..Strenuus labore mentis, corporis non neglegens,

..omnium sententiarum perspicax inquisitor,

..semper artium bonarum pervicax videbitur.

What a load of crap..:P

I much preferred the alternative version, which started 'We must go down to the Don again' but I'm not sure we can publish that on a mixed company forum like this :hihi:

At Westfield School (the old old old one), we sang Jerusalem (or mimed it).

At Notre Dame we had a long school song,

with hearts aglow, round banner bright,

in serried ranks we stand

All ready for the glorious fight

Against all wrong

For Christs own right

to rule our loved land

to rule our loved land

And in fighting we will sing

may our voices gladly ring

in homage true to Christ the king

to Christ and Notre Dame

There are another few verses I wont bore you with, the aboove gi ves the flavour. Sad to say, I remember all the words, but sometimes not what day it is!!

Thanks for that Karentrinder - I went there and could only remember the tune a few words of it. If you hadn't posted I'd be lying awake trying to think of it
