mister_tmg   10 #1 Posted May 10, 2010 A friend of mine - it is not me! - has suffered from chronic back pain for the last seven years. It mainly seems to be muscle tension in her upper back. I - a male friend (a gay one, I hasten to add) have attempted to massage it quite a few times, and the affected area seems to have a lot of tension - it feels like concrete!  The problem is that she is quite strapped for cash, being a part-time postgraduate student with lots of outgoing expenses. She did have physiotherapy for a month last year, and found it helped a little, but it was too expensive to carry on any longer.  She's also asked her GP on a number of occasions, who basically told her to take painkillers and deal with it! However, she suffers from asthma, and doesn't want to put more medication into her body. (I also feel it's a useless suggestion, and shows how negligent her GP is!)  So can anyone recommend a cheaper therapist, the one she had last year was £20 a session. Or is there any way of getting NHS treatment for it? This GP said it wasn't possible, which I can't believe.
 Share this content via...

OhFunkIt   10 #3 Posted May 10, 2010 If your friend has had this problem for seven years it might be more cost-effective to get a specialist opinion if previous treatment hasn't helped?  If she decides to go down that route I can recommend Dr Steve Hodgson at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Ltd. He’s not cheap but he is excellent.
 Share this content via...
PatzB   10 #4 Posted May 10, 2010 Not sure how much she is and if she does student discounts but Sharon has sorted my back out and is lovely.  She is based in S10 too which will help if your friend is a student  http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/usport/s10/physiotherapyservice/profile.html
 Share this content via...
andysmith22   10 #5 Posted May 10, 2010 I am having treatment at sandygate lane as well as the neuro enablement service coming out . The physio at sandy gate lane is £35 for half hour or there is a place up at upperthorpe/halamshire hospital and there price is £50 for an hour. I go once a week to the one on sandygate lane , you can see the diffrence between paying private and the nhs.  The enablement service I have for free through the nhs.And although they are good and I would love to be saving money right now ,I use the private physio as a top up. Because they push me more and do more stuff with me then the nhs.  So there are 2 choice but I would defo see specialist first as physio's specialise in diffrent area's. And if you don't want to pay private ask for a referall to hallmshire out patients physio.  Hope you get it all sorted x
 Share this content via...
upontheroof   10 #6 Posted May 10, 2010 you can self refer via your GP surgery. Just ask at reception for a self referral form - you fill it and and send it to the address on the form. You will get a response in around 2 weeks and will have a choice of about 6 places, Fairlawns at Middlewood or NGH or University Medical Centre etc, you choose where. This is an NHS service and will cost nothing. I had a course of very successul treatment. Good Luck
 Share this content via...
nerd   10 #7 Posted May 10, 2010 I have had some physio through my GP surgery on the NHS. I was only able to have 8 sessions on the NHS but it did really help get things under control for a while, is there another GP at the practice she can see if her GP is rubbish? I also had a few top-up sessions at pure physiotherapy on penistone road, about £30 a session I think, but they were very good The other thing that was recommended to me was to go to a gym and ask a personal trainer to draw you up a plan of gentle stretches and excercises to improve strength and mobility in the back and neck. It does seem to have helped a little
 Share this content via...

He’s not cheap but he is excellent.  Definitely the best practice in Sheffield. I would thoroughly recommend Hallamshire Physiotherapy. They will be honest with you and if they can't help will say so and not put you through unnecessary treatment.
 Share this content via...
