smog   10 #1 Posted April 29, 2010 I went to a hustings yesterday in the hope if seeing all the candidates in the flesh & hearing what they stand for, as they don't seem to doorstep anymore. Jonathan Harston didn't turn up (neither did the UKIP & BNP cands either but I'm not interested in them). I know what he looks like as he used to be my local councillor, but what is he like, what does he stand for? I've tried googling him, but I can only find that he is a computer nerd. We've not even had a leaflet through from him. Can anyone help?
 Share this content via...

Unregistered   10 #3 Posted April 29, 2010  ...Jonathan Harston - LibDem Hillsbro'/Brightside Candidate. What is he like, what does he stand for?  Education: 1980-1987: Myers Grove School, Sheffield, O & A levels; 1987-1990: Stirling University, Computing Science BSc; 1994-1996: Sheffield College, Electrical Installation C&G.  Biography: Jonathan's family are from Sheffield and Whitby. He was born in Sheffield after his grandparents moved there in the 1960s as teachers. He was brought up in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield, attending Malin Bridge and then Myers Grove school just before David Blunkett's Labour council abolished its Sixth Form. He then went to Stirling University where he studied Computing Science, Environmental Science and Japanese Language and briefly co-wrote, produced and presented a breakfast-time radio show for University Radio Airthry. He worked in Hong Kong for three years, as a teacher and then as a computer systems manager, before returning to Sheffield.  After joining the party in 1995 and campaigning to increase the Lib Dem membership of Sheffield City Council Jonathan was elected in 1999 in the elections that swept Labour from power. In 2005 Jonathan was selected to stand against David Blunkett in Sheffield Brightside, the strongest Labour seat in the country. He met all his aims to move the Lib Dems from 3rd to 2nd place, take more than 10% of the vote, and reduce Labour's majority.  Jonathan has been a school governor for 12 years. He has experience in building and property management and interests in computing, genealogy, environmental issues and mapping, producing several of his own maps, and has used this in various ways such as in submissions to planning applications, development reviews and to local and parliamentary boundary reviews.  Like all LibDems - He wants a change from Nasty Parties and Brown Parties. . . . max   13 #4 Posted April 29, 2010 If it was a hustings it's likely it was for the parliamentary election. Was David Blunkett there?
 Share this content via...
matsalleh   10 #5 Posted April 29, 2010 If it was a hustings it's likely it was for the parliamentary election. Was David Blunkett there? Perhaps he is not interested in going up against Blunkett.
 Share this content via...
jgharston   11 #6 Posted April 29, 2010 Sorry, there were some crossed wires. I was invited by the vicar of St. Polycarp's, then some time later somebody mentioned St. John's, so I emailed asking where the meeting was, then received an email saying the meeting at Church on the Corner had been cancelled, so made arrangement to go to the nuclear power debate at Hallam Uni instead. I checked through my emails this morning and couldn't find anything that specified a location, just emails saying the date signed vicar of St. Polycarp's. smog   10 #7 Posted April 29, 2010 Oh dear, it is a shame you didn't make it Jonathan, the Socialist Coalition candidate was riding roughshod over David Blunkett and Jon Sharpe. I didn't agree with what she was saying but she can certainly talk. There were some good questions on the economy, the budget deficit, Trident, global warming and probably others, but I had to leave before the end. Any idea when your literature is going to be delivered as I would like to see it before I vote?
 Share this content via...
RazorSHarp   10 #8 Posted April 29, 2010 I thought the lib dem candidate was Karen Southwood?
 Share this content via...
Localman   10 #9 Posted April 29, 2010 Oh dear, it is a shame you didn't make it Jonathan, the Socialist Coalition candidate was  Not Maxine, the Milosovic supporter, who opposed intervention in Bosnia and Kosova to stop the genocide?  I've noticed that she's got Chris Searle speaking at her meetings as an 'educational activist'. Surely not the same Chris Searle who had to be sacked as Headteacher from Earl Marshal/Fir Vale because of his disastrous performance which was failing a whole generation of local children? The Chavs   10 #10 Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) I thought the lib dem candidate was Karen Southwood?  You are right for the "local" city elections. This thread is talking about the "national" candidate. Edited April 29, 2010 by The Chavs
 Share this content via...
A.B.Yaffle   24 #11 Posted April 29, 2010 The best bit of the meeting was when Maxine revealed that it costs her £167 to get from Sheffield to London by train!
 Share this content via...
Wardsbitter   10 #12 Posted April 29, 2010 interesting post- is there any point in voting for anyone other than David Blunklett for Hillsborough/Brightside? Incidentally anyone notice the other week when the Star referred to the Constituency as Brightside ! Cheek ! Shows the ever declining standards of our local press these days.
