aelfheah   10 #1 Posted April 25, 2010 Which moments or film scenes do you think are the most notorious for making audiences look away in horror?  I'd list these, in random order;  Marathon Man- the nazi dentist scene with Olivier/Hoffman Saw 3- The 'head turning device' scene (and sound effects) Deliverance- 'The' Hillbilly male rape scene Casino- the eye-popping scene with Joe Pesci Jaws- the head in the hole in the boat (I was 10) Requiem for a Dream- A couple of the final scenes, sex/amputation Platoon- "the VC Village" scene Trainspotting- the baby on the ceiling head turning scene The Hitcher- girl tied between two trucks? The Passion of the Christ- the whole flogging scene American History X- the kerb-biting stamp scene
 Share this content via...

Especially agree with Requiem for a Dream & American History X  For some reason I can watch most quite violent stuff in movies fine, and don't really connect it to reality, but anything involving teeth or fingernails... I know this is a cr*p example, but you just made me think of a bit in "Blade - The Series" where this woman was torturing someone by taking a small knife & inserting it under each fingernail right down to the cuticle then pinging it off  I think that disturbed me way more than any other big screen OTT gore scene I've ever watched! aelfheah   10 #5 Posted May 2, 2010 Ah yes, Blade was an excellent trilogy!  I agree about the torture scene.
 Share this content via...
chinaski   10 #6 Posted May 2, 2010 The rape scene in "Irreversible" and the one's in the OP.  I found the end of the Spanish horror REC hard watching and the French film "Martyr's" contained a few scenes that had me biting my pillow.  What's the infamous zombie movie whereby a woman has her head slowly brought forward into a shard of wood? That was pretty extreme.  Oh joy of joy, here it is! Look away now. Seriously, if you're under 18, look away now.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCt9HcEuGE
 Share this content via...
Claret   10 #7 Posted May 4, 2010 Nothing can be as bad as the scene in Dead Presidents where the soldier is disemboweled and castrated alive. It's probably about 10 years since I've see that film, but it still makes me feel ill.
 Share this content via...
SarahD Â Â 10 #8 Posted May 21, 2010 The Irreversible rape scene goes on for so long it's almost impossible to look away. I remember going to the cinema to watch that and the usher was stood at the entrance warning us of the serious violence and I just laughed it off. Â And then on the way out I think I was a gibbering wreck! Â I tend to look away a lot, I'm wimpy: Â A Tale of Two Sisters - the ghost girl under the kitchen cabinets and the ghost in the bedroom. Â Dark Water - the bit in the lift where the ghost girl shows her decomposed face (I didn't close my eyes in time - shudder) Â Waltz with Bashir - the moment where it flips from cartoon to reality and the widows and mothers of dead children come running at the camera begging for mercy (I literally couldn't breathe)
 Share this content via...
Jonny5 Â Â 10 #9 Posted May 25, 2010 Audition. The last ten minutes. Actually the last forty are pretty gruelling. Â Nic Cage caving in some hoods face in in Wild At Heart. Â The Ring. Both versions. Though the US one will always have a special place in my heart as my mum rang just as the demon/witch came through. Â City of The Living Dead. The nastiest goriest film I've ever seen. Woman throws up her insides = I look away. Â The end of Don't Look Now. Â The last ten minutes of Rec. Â A different kind of look away is Chaplin's City Lights. The ending so heartbreaking and Chaplin looks so frail and vulnerable its hard to watch. Â Similarly the humiliation of The Elephant Man makes for uneasy viewing. Â Loads of look away moments on Cronenberg's cv but I reckon The Brood and the false pregnancy from The Fly take the honours. Â There is a reveal in A Warning to the Curious (from the old Ghost story for Christmas run) that gave me the willies for days. Â I could go on a bit more but I'll leave it with the ITV production of The Woman in Black which put me off hotel rooms for life. The Passion of the Christ- the whole flogging scene American History X- the kerb-biting stamp scene  I'd like to add the shooting of the little girl in the original 'Assault on Precinct 13' to the above list, but even if you combined the best (worst?) scenes from all the above I'm afraid you don't even come close to 'Antichrist'! There are some absolutely beautifully shot scenes & great acting but I'm not even going to start describing what happens at the end, if you've seen it you know where I'm coming from.
