swarfendor437   14 #121 Posted June 10, 2010 BT and the others charge extra for almost the same basic service. Dont forget that the speed you get is mainly dependent on the quality of the BT line and distance from the exchange.  Very well put - you only get 24 Meg connection if you live next door and on copper wire connection  Glad to say that torrents DO work on talktalk and if they dont work correctly on yours then its probably the settings on your router or firewall.  Whilst this point is valid I have been on TalkTalk forums and seen complaints about people not being able to access 'RapidShare' - which was a 'RapidShare' problem - not TalkTalk's  Finally I think it is laughable that anyone would want to go back to BT - they are the overpriced ones! I still get begging letters from them to come back. The thing with TalkTalk there prices are fixed (increases whenever they are likely to happen excluded) - BT clearly state (in small print) that their invitational rates are for 3 months only - big deal.  When I first started with TalkTalk I did query the speed - having used the TalkTalk Members Forums and made contact with a 'Blue Top' the issue was sorted within 24 hours. My initial download/upload speeds were about 150 Kbs/24 Kbs. They went upt to 240 Kbs/45 Kbs. Currently I am getting 400 Kbs/90 Kbs and approximately 3 miles from our exchange which I consider to be pretty good.  I know someone on the Co-op Broadband/Telephone service and because they are less than a mile from the exchange get over 1000 Kbs download speeds.  swarfendor43
 Share this content via...
LLVL Â Â 10 #122 Posted June 10, 2010 At less than a mile id hope it was more then that, unless you're get ng Kb and KB mixed up - in which case id still hope it was better then that really.
 Share this content via...
big_g   10 #123 Posted July 10, 2010 Anyone else's TalkTalk broadband off now?  Ours went off at about 19:00 (or about then). Still down now. Have had to come into work to post this - had to connect to the Internet for something else and thought that I'd see if anyone else was having problems.  According to this link http://broadband.talktalk.co.uk/outages?NODE_ID=11344 there are no issues at the moment in Sheffield. May just be me then.   G
 Share this content via...

Blinks   10 #126 Posted July 11, 2010 I've had trouble connecting all night.....but I always do on Saturdays and other 'peak' times. Not good though, is it. I pay enough to expect to be able to get Internet Service whenever I want. - They need to get their server's sorted out.
 Share this content via...
Bertielil   10 #127 Posted July 11, 2010 Hi, Mine in S17 also went off around 7pm last night, although telephone & TV fine. Still off this am, so rang tech support, checked everything their end "shouldn't be any problem". I've just turned everything off, unplugged phone line, replugged & started up again. Lo & behold, all working as it should be.
 Share this content via...

7hills   10 #129 Posted October 12, 2010 Is anyones talk talk off at the moment? I livein s10 and it went on sunday night, it was working fine one minute and the next i had no connection.  spent over an hour on the phone last night to talktalk who couldn't identify an issue. they then did a line test and said an error occured so they were going to send a repair guy out to test the exchange? What exactly is the exchange? is this a central place in shefffield or the green boxes you see on the streets? If so the green box is outside my house.  Regarding previous posts on here about talk talk speeds. Since i moved to talk talk my connection has been brilliant and the speed is great, but that probably has something to do with the green box being outside my house. doyle   10 #130 Posted October 12, 2010 Just dont let anyone in the house, mine was down from Friday till Monday and they couldnt fix it, they said I needed a specialist to see to it. My Norton security sorted it out for me online. On the talk talk phone line they do say if an engineer comes to your house to do tests and things it will cost 99.99. swarfendor437   14 #131 Posted October 12, 2010 [1] ... I livein s10 and it went on sunday night, it was working fine one minute and the next i had no connection. [2] ... What exactly is the exchange?  1. As you live in S10 it is almost certainly the Broomhill Exchange  2. An exchange is where all the telecomms and data switches live - it's like a little house and in Broomhill I think (not sure) that is near to the Broomhill Library - this contains BT Equipment and TalkTalk Equipment - BT own the building - TalkTalk (or rather its backbone provider, Opal Telecom) manage the TalkTalk equipment inside the Exchange - if it is BT equipment that is faulty then they have to put a call out to BT Openreach - see my links elsewhere to get to the Opal Telecom website for service status.  Just dont let anyone in the house, mine was down from Friday till Monday and they couldnt fix it, they said I needed a specialist to see to it. My Norton security sorted it out for me online. On the talk talk phone line they do say if an engineer comes to your house to do tests and things it will cost 99.99.  This is what BT do as well - they will test the line to your house and if they find that the fault is with your equipment (Telephone Handset/Microfilters/Modem/Router) then they will charge you the £99.99 (just like BT) if the fault is determined to be on 'your side' of the telephone master socket. There was a very interesting article in one of the PC Magazines which argued that BT was telling pork pies because they do have proper testing equipment but usually bring out a poor one to get to charge the £99.99.  You could compare this to your Gas or Water Supply - The Gas and Water companies are responsible for the pipework that leads up to your meter/stop tap but anything beyond that is your responsibility.  swarfendor43
 Share this content via...
