Getting rid of a metal bed?

Recommended Posts

I've searched both in this forum and generally using google, but I can't find a decent answer to this, so...

I've got the headboard, footboard and side rails of a dead double steel frame bed. I want rid of the bits, as they're cluttering up the flat.

The place I'm in is privately rented, so it would cost be over £30 for the council to pick it up (It's only free for council tenants). I think the cost is closer to £40. I sure as hell don't want to spend that kind of money, just to give Veola some free steel.

Obvious answer is, go to a scrap yard. Unfortunately I don't have a car, and I live on Glossop road, so I don't imagine there are many scrap yards I can easily get to, as they all seem to be in the north east of town. I could be wrong though, so my first question is, are there any scrap yards anyone knows of within walking distance of Glossop road (the Broomhill end)?

The other thing I tried was calling a scrap metal merchant. They seem to think picking up relatively small amounts of steel isn't worth it, since the price of steel is so low. Does anyone know a (licensed) scrap metal dealer who'll pick up steel? I don't care if they don't pay me, but I don't want to pay them. At least not much.

Get a hacksaw. It will all chop down to manageable parts.

Check out on here which streets the 'scrap men' are operating on, leave it on someone's back garden and job's a good 'un. :(
