The Sheffield gay scene part 2

Recommended Posts

Too right by gum .. me and my dog were in Dempseys recently and they are now charging £3.20 for a pint bloody hell ! No one can afford that any more when there is Wetherspoons .... I'll have to see what this Red Lion is like when it opens up .. will it be like the Howard .. and its not a bad little boozer too tho too many screens for my liking - you cant have a decent chat and my dog dont like it ....

I'll point to independent venue again... Wetherspoons branches are open all day, and has a LOT of footfall, and has hundreds of venues. Dempseys doesn't have anywhere near the same footfall. And thats nothing to do with drinks prices might I add, its because its a gay bar.

Look at how much bars charge on west st and division st for a pint before bringing this up still please.

Are you just playing devils advocate, or do you really believe what you are saying?

You think that paying over £3 for a pint is reasonable?

I expect to pay that price for a real cask ale / cider, in the rutland/sheaf view/sheffield tap, but I begrudge paying it for bog standard lager or beer.

but the price of crap beer has steadily crept up everywhere... and its all tax!

I just wish wages were climbing at the rate of beer inflation.

Since I was 18 the cost of a pint has doubled, but wages have gone up about 20%, I have cause to moan!

If I go to Dempseys I usually drink wine, even though its nasty cat piddle echo falls. (they should get a decent range of wines, there are lots of cheaper and tastier ones out there.)

or I resort to buying a bottle of Lambrini - because it's still the cheapest and trashiest way to get drunk!

I don't believe it - I know that its reasonable. Why? As I know how much stock costs, taxes, and all the licenses they have to pay for. Beer is expensive, decent spirits are expensive. Have you ever worked in a bar/club/pub environment?

I don't class Amstel or Kronenberg as cheap/crap lager. (Which are around the 3.20 mark in most establishments.). Fosters, yes, is like ****. If you want wine, I suggest you go to a specialised wine bar, not a normal bar/club, as nowhere in sheffield along the main stretches specialise to that extent - as wines aren't the big sellers i'm afraid.

Why are you all moaning about Dempsey's prices? Go to Affinity, it's about £3.50 for bottled lager and pints of lager. £2.50 for smaller shots too.

Affinity lager is not £3.50 a pint Aaron, unless you are buying Stella which is more expensive anyway. But then its expensive in all pubs.

Fosters is £3, or for the whole of August it is £2.50 between 5 and 7 for "happy 2 hours".

In answer to Amstel, its not a cheap/crap lager, and at £2.90ish at Lions Lair, its a steal.

Just for further reference - a 11 gallon keg (88 pints) costs between £94.99 and £140. Thats from wholesalers, not direct from a supplier like Carlsberg, or Heinekin who may be cheaper, do refills, etc.. Beer acquisition/supply isn't my area if i'm honest! :hihi:

Means your average pint costs £1.08-£1.59 for the pub/bar. Hence, £1 pints is out of the question.

I no longer go out in Sheffield esp the gay scene. I go to Leeds. The Bridge and The Viaduct do £2 a pint from 12noon to 8pm every day, not just lager but beer and cidar too, and The Viaduct has a DJ on with a mix of music, it's friendly and it's PACKED all the time. No door charge either.

I refuse to be ripped off.

Nasty, cat piddle, cheapest and trashiest. The exact words i'd use to describe Dempsey's.

Finally Climax is going to invest some of its money in a guest DJ...

I am guessing it is because it is now moving to HUBS (as I forecast a year ago!) and they want to ensure they get a good crowd to the first one....

£2.50 still isn't cheap

I pay that for a pint in my favorite gay pub in London!

I was in London recently, and I went to a great gay bar called '286' in Lewisham in South London near where I was staying; it is rather like Affinity in terms of size and atmosphere, and on every Thursday night they have a special cheap drinks night called OUTRAGEOUS, with ALL drinks (including pints of Peroni, Guinness and the like) for ONLY £1.50, ALL NIGHT!

I chatted with the manager about how they achieve this, with London rents, etc., and they admitted that they don't make a profit on this night, but it sure brings in the customers, and on the other nights, beer prices, for example, are around the £3 a bottle/£4 pint mark.

Surely someone in Sheffield could try the same?

Indeed at ICANDY at GROOVE in Chesterfield EVERY WEDNESDAY, we have a packed house, and FREE Vodka shots all night, plus 99p drink offers and even cheap Jagerbombs...

Getting on to other subjects, I got tipped off recently about the following from a message on Facebook:

Dan.. Kath has resigned as Chair.. i hope you stand again for it

I'll certainly follow up on this friend's advice; he himself was on Pride Ctte some years back; but latest news has it that a handful of remaining Pride Ctte members voted in a new chair in a CLOSED meeting, with less than half-a-dozen people in the room.

I'll say no more about this for now, but I assume most of you will already be aware of the situation...

Finally, remember there is NO Climax this month, as in their infinite wisdom, the organisers felt it was better to pull the event for a month, before relocating it to the HALLAM UNI HUBS on 28th September (With Scott Mills as special guest DJ).

Shame about making Sheffield an effective Gay Scene desert for 8 weeks as a result of this decision, but by way of consolation, why not come down to my own special 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION at DEMPSEYS, THIS MONDAY 20 AUGUST. There will be entertainment and the regular £3 buffet and a cake too; I might even sing or mime some of your requests! Fun starts 8PM!

Tyranna, not sure where you are going with certain things you mention, because you are stating the obvious when it comes to prices.

A lot of nightclubs make a loss on certain nights just to get faces in. Do you expect them to make a big profit? They are don't make a big loss for sure.

It's going to be another tough month for the Sheffield bars though. Manchester Pride is coming up next weekend and then everyone will be skint. News regarding Manchester, they are not doing any favours at the moment with who is coming, Amelia Lily and Sep so far. Compared to Alex Burke, Pixie Lott, Blue and other big "ish" names. I am expecting a massive name for Saturday, for sure?!
