The Sheffield gay scene part 2

Recommended Posts

Regarding the new "Sheffield Gay Quarter" , has anyone heard any more plans on this for maybe next year?

I must admit that I've almost stopped going to Dempseys for good now, not on account of the club itself which is still nice and friendly and somewhat busy at least on the weekends, but on account of (and I feel that its my duty to warn people on this) when leaving this club late at night, the amount of unsavoury characters who hang around about outside it these days, either guys/gangs out to scam people out of their cards/money or characters with substance abuse issues. While Dempseys itself have ample door staff, especially at weekends, they seem to have no power beyond their own club entrance with regards to this.

The situation now reminds me of Barcelona, where when you leave a late night venue, if you don't hop into a taxi immediately from the door, even going say 100 feet away looking for a taxi is hazardous, as you will be pounced on by some unsavoury person(s) as described above :suspect:

Its a sad state of affairs really. One would hope that any redevelopment around this area could only be good and would help to push away such people for good, but time will tell

He is chasing the student pink pound.

Students with money, what special unicorns they must be!

The problem with the scene, is it is a solution to a problem that no longer exists. The problem was, how to safely meet other gay people.

With Grindr and such apps, it is just not necessary. Sheffield has never managed to have a gay quarter, and that boat has long since sailed.

It would be interesting to know how such areas in Manchester and Leeds are faring in the Grindr age. Even in London, many iconic gay venues have closed down.

I guess everythingbis about choice but for myself places like Grindr are killing the ability to hold conversations and build trust. Grindr etc are all about an image, you don't get to know the more important sexier things about a person such as humour, personality or character. Grindr is all about an image and sometimes those images are fake. At least in a bar you get the chance to socialise, have fun, make friends and maybe meet someone your attracted to in a more meaningful way than just a picture. Gay bars mainly offer a safe space to meet and socialise. I am sure that in many of the straight bars on a Friday or Saturday night 2 guys being "close" would not go down very well with some.

Because people in Leeds have money to spend. That's why Leeds has Harvey Nichols, Habitat, House of Frazer as well as Queen's court. Where Sheffield has none of those, it did have Habitat and HOF, but both closed down a long time ago.

I'm not aware that the people of Leeds have any more, or less, money to spend than the people of Sheffield. But I suspect there is a difference in attitude to spending. I've honestly never known anywhere quite like Sheffield for folks being so cost-conscious and unwilling to part with their cash. That's the problem. It's a cultural thing here - "make do and mend" "nowt fancy" "looks a bit too posh". All that kind of stuff - it really gets me down at times because we miss out on really nice things because the majority of Sheffield folk won't value it or pay for it.

Most of the venue closures in London are to do with gentrification, particularly sanitising the Soho area. Licences are either not being renewed or else given such stringent and expensive conditions that the club owners have no choice but to fold.

the reason I don't go to Dempsey's is because it gives me nothing that I want from an LGBT venue. That's why I'm looking forward to the new venues that might provide some variety and cater to people's needs.

Just wondered where were the best gay venues to go to in Sheffield on New Years Eve and what was the experience like?

As there are only 2 this is pretty easy. They were busy. Dempseys more so.

Walked past after 8pm last night. Doors open and work being undertaken. Looks a long way from being able to have an April opening though.

That's usually the way with these things. Deadlines focus minds.

I was in Dempseys recently and I could hear all sorts of banging and drilling noises going on ...

So I guess workmen are beavering away in the adjoining premises :o:o
