The Sheffield gay scene part 2

Recommended Posts

Not half as much as I wonder what yours is, the Yorkshireman is now a gay bar, the Odeon is now a bingo hall, The Stonehouse is now part of tk maxx, Cockaynes is now Argos and Walshes is now TJ Huges. If you have a problrem with any of these facts, I suggest that you hit the report button.

You were not stating The Yorkshireman in now a gay bar, as the Odeon is now a bingo hall. You were suggesting, with no offence intended, that the former licencee would be surprised in some way by this fact.

Do you think that Odeon are surprised the building is now a bingo hall? And would you feel the need to comment on their behalf, with no offence intended?

Haha crookesey, very true!

Yes, the building went for £160k, it was in the market for £250k. Just because it sold for £150k doesn't mean that's what it's worth. It never had a for sale sign outside as they kept mysteriously disappearing, so unless you looked on the Punch or Cristies (Leeds) websites, you wouldn't have know it was for sale! Punch, the previous owner had it on their disposal list, and pretty much took what we offered for it, they are in a desperate position as they have over £4 billion worth of debt. How much do you think a refurb costs? To put things in perspective, we are spending £20k on the toilets and new stairway alone. The total budget for the refurb is between £80k-£100k.

Yes, the 'owner' company is listed in Somerset, although financially it is owned by Charlie and myself. I'm not going to explain the details of it to a bitter ex-manager and a 21yr old boy with a chip on his shoulder!

Re illegal activities. I think it's pretty obvious that a large number of people who stay out post midnight, especially till 6am, are usually very drunk, or on some form of stimulant. I've been in what are considered posh bars down Ecclesall road before late evening and seen people snorting white powder. If you think that Lions is the only bar in town where some people might have taken stimulants, then you are more naive than I thought! The Police are very happy with our procedures to control these activities, aside from putting a camera above each toilet, which some people may frown upon, what more can we do? Yes, we do have new door staff and a large percentage of new bar staff. I can assure you that none of our door staff would tolerate drug dealing or use, if people are caught. In fact, we have a rule that if 2 males are caught in the cubicle together they are asked to leave immediately. Less so with women as they are always toileting together!

Aaron, you've obviously not been in for ages, but still seem very wound up about Lions, I find to destress about things that linger in your mind, its good to rub your ear lobes between your thumb and index finger while saying woosaaaaa. Maybe you should try it?!

Really great to see some investment in venues on the scene. Really good news. Personally, it would be nice to see Lions Lair being run more functionally as a pub/ bar weeknights and early evenings again, as the lights out loud music effect makes it a bit impractical when meeting with friends. But will come along and see the finished result when it's done!

James, the new part owner, Charlie, is straight. I am not. We own it 50/50 so there!

I haven't asked for any explanation?

Aaron asked a question and I have responded with the answer, if anyone cares to look up property details online they could see for themselves. You were keen to point out it was 50/50 earlier, though a cash sale and a holding company in Somerset would maybe suggest there is more to the deal than a straight buy out.

If anything I think it is a good deal, but it is heavily dependent on the council dragging their heels for another 5 years to make it really worthwhile.

In regards to some of the constant recurring themes of the thread maybe some Hamlet, act 3, scene 2 is applicable!

Thanks admills, point taken on board. It's a bit of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' thing, as the main room is so small, and we have to cater for a very mixed bunch. We try to keep it quietish until 10pm currently. When the work is done, where the gents toilet and pub kitchen are at the minute (the room next to the beer garden), they will not have any speakers in at all, so can be used as a chatting area / chill out when the music is loud. The kitchen will have glass doors out onto the decking. Although we are not allowed out on the decking after midnight, it will remain lit, as it will be nice to look out on to.

The Facebook Fuel Sheffield group has Fuel Hull as an admin, so I assume the group is legit. They are being very quiet about the position of the venue and when it will open, so whether they've started anything I don't know. It would be nice to see them return, variety is the spice of life as they say!

Ah it's amusing to see that it has sold for £150k to be fair. It's a fair enough value.

Although I am glad to know you have new door staff, it would be nice to actually know that things have changed, but I doubt it. Same old crowd go to the same place. It makes me think because of the low standard of the place and staff in general that it must be making some very decent money, although on the odd time I have been in, it seems a lot of people don't bother buying drinks in there or perhaps just lounge about outside the place.

As for your other comments, it seems you are wound up by your petty replies to my comments. If you can't handle my opinion of LL, then don't bother replying, because it's is quite obvious that you are getting wound up about it.

It's amusing to see that apparently Graham knows my age, facebook profile and still claims not to be a stalker. :hihi::hihi:

And Fuel..

It would be nice to see the place open up again. I was mentioning that with the right owners and knowledge of the Sheffield gay scene it would be a great oppurtunity for Sheffield and possible new owners.

I messaged the people who are supposed to own the building though and they seem now to own the building no more. Although that was nearly a year ago. Thinking about location and stuff regarding Fuel, it could be a fantastic boost for Affinity trade as well.
