Walking below Stanage edge

Recommended Posts

Had a great walk this weekend starting from the ranger centre below Stanage edge. We climbed to the top of the ridge and walked along until we reached Burbage Bridge, then across to Higger Tor and back round below the edge to the centre. There were quite a few people out depsite the mist and limited visibility. There were some mountain bikers crashing through the fog along the top of the edge, which is a footpath only. This is really irritating for some walkers and gives the responsible bikers a bad name. Shame but like any portion of society there are always those who dont think that the rules, or laws apply to them. Same with the car parking. There are two large car parks along the bottom road, yet some still park on the grass verge. It onlyy costs £3.50 for the day and all that money goes back in to providing amenities for the public. Anyway, none of this spoilt a good day walking. There were some climbers out on the ridge and I am always impressed by the youth of today who get involved in the great outdoors. Walking up to the top of the ridge we had to cut steps in the snow which was still 6ft deep in places. The area reminds me a little of Scotland, with the ridge and pine tree plantations.

Very interesting, and well put thecyclist, especially you being prepared to name and shame 'your own', so to speak. My turn now. On our Shamblers Walk on Sunday, some of the countryside wasn't the prettiest we've ever seen, but there was an unbelievable amount of litter in quite a few places. Why do people out walking ( and I'm not going to say walkers ) leave litter everywhere. Just because it's not the Peaks, this doesn't make it right to spoil the countryside does it. Capital punishment is the answer according to my OH!

I can beat that, whilst out walking on Sunday with the Northen Striders,we came across a burnt out car on the roman road leading from Ringinglow to Fox house.

It must have been 1/2 mile from any road

Complete Idiots..........................

It angers me when people go out into the countryside and do not respect it. All future walks out into the peaks or wherever, I made a promise to pick up litter (where possible), bag it and dispose of it in a bin. I urge every walker to do the same to help stop our beautiful countryside becoming like a tip.

Having walked that route over the weekend I seen 4 people on crosser type motorbikes and had a pint with another in the Fox house whom had succumbed to a flat tire. Was just as busy as summertime if you ask me!

Visibility maybe 100 yards, I had a nice conversation with a woman form Nottingham, heading to Burbage bridge from High Neb.

Scoobz

I only ever use my own two feet and never, ever cycle. To be honest I am not a huge fan of cyclists, therefore the handle is ironic.

Come to think of it, I have been using more than my two feet these past few weeks. Having fallen down on every single walk, either knee deep in snow or skating on thick ice. A friend says that when I faal, its reminiscient of a tortoise been placed on its back. All limbs flailing.!!!

I usually end up carrying back a couple of empty bottles people have thrown away from my walks as well, I just don't get the mentality of some people. On a lighter note I have a friend who has become mildly obsessed with this activity and it's nearly impossible to go for a stroll with him without stopping every 30 seconds to pick some litter up. I'm as much for respecting the countryside as anyone else but he literally comes back with carrier bags full of junk. A warning to obsesive compulsives everywhere! Once you start it can be difficult to stop!

Hi all,

please remember that orange peel and banana skins are included as litter, these do take ages to degrade. In fact I believe that the degrading of banana skins can be counted in years.
