Cambridge Motor Company Pictures 1970's

Recommended Posts

Hi All, just wondered if anybody had any pictures of my dads car dealership on Division Street back in the 70's. It was were Yates is at the minute, it was called Cambridge Motor Company and used to sell all kinds of exotic cars from jags to americans. I thought I would put a thread on here just in case, as I think my dad would love a framed picture of it. Cheers Jason:help:

I knew your Dad then from going to josephines etc, He was bald and always wore bright coloured pringle type jumpers and bright coloured farah trousers. This would be the early eighties though.

Yates was the san remo italian then, the car pitch was on the corner.

Another fella your dad will remember is Peter Holmes who had the flower shop.

I don`t have any pictures but do vividly remember the car showroom and i think it was further down towards Barkers Pool where the Spar is. There was also a pub on the corner of Cambridge St called The Albert i think. I also remember Peter Holmes and the girl there, Andrea i think. The showroom was then turned into Gangsters Restaurant with its Laser show.

There were some fantastic cars in there and i used to drool over them especially the favoured Corvettes as there used to be so many of them on sale and also the Ferraris, Porsches, Lambos and other Italian finery. I think the jeweller next door used to be a good customer as he always had a flash motor, Elite i think.

Seem to remember John Bee auto repairs were the same company.

That was Carver St Motors and the bald headed guy you mentioned was Tony Boyes, he was always in Josies

Neither had anything to do with Cambridge Motors or the Bees which the original poster had enquired about.

hiya Busy bee , the garage where Yates' is at the junction of Carver Street and Division Street , was a garage called " Motor Services - Carver Street " and went through to Backfields which was a narrow lane . Two pictures of the garage taken in Backfields can be seen on :-www.picturesheffield.com the reference numbers are : s13186 & s13184 . I worked at this garage from 1961 until 1963 as an apprentice motor mechanic . The 3 owners (partners ) were : Charles May , Charles Frith and Harry Whitehouse . I think Cambridge Motors ( who had some really top class cars ) if I remember correctly was about 200 yards down Cambridge Street , just a bit further down than Gilders Autos , who only specialised in VW cars .

There was never a car showroom where Yates' is .

I hope this helps

I think I can remember that they sold Jowett cars in the 1940/50s from this car showroom.

there was a billiard hall above the car premises and a genel at the side that led to to a number of little mesters workshops who were cutlery makers. The genel was between the car showroom and the Albert Pub.
