If that's how you generally converse most of the time then its as good of a place as any. It might be worthwhile to even link him to this thread just to show him that your level of concern for not wanting to hurt his feelings drove you to ask for advice.

I'm with Strix - If he's a friend who has feelings he'll still be a friend if they're not reciprocated ...... If he's doing that "I like her, not declare my intentions, be her friend and then once she likes me she'll see how great a boyfriend I'll be"' thing then it'll become clear.
