megalithic #1 Posted January 23, 2010 Hey up. Was just wondering if it would be possible to have one of the group leaders plot the walks in advance and make the gpx file available so we could load it into our gps's before hand. A good site for doing this is - http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/?sid=ae97bd6350878908542ad59f54de63dd Cheers.
 Share this content via...
Village Owl #2 Posted January 23, 2010 Hi Megalithic, It sounds a wonderful idea in theory, but it may be asking a bit too much. We do however carry extra copies of the route we are doing on that day, and hand them out to anyone that wants one before the walk starts. megalithic #3 Posted January 23, 2010 It only takes me 10 minutes to plot a walk such as the 15km Kinder round etc. If i had the route i'd be happy to do it but it would mean people having to give me their e-mail addresses etc so i could send it. It'd be nice to have a look at the route before hand if like me you've never done it.
 Share this content via...
scoobz #4 Posted January 24, 2010 Sorry about the late response, been offline a while. In reply to the question - too technical for me I'm afraid!
 Share this content via...
Hemlock #5 Posted January 24, 2010 I'd be willing to do it if I have the route far enough in advance to do it We'll see what we can do megalithic - may take a bit to get it up & running. Anyone else interested?
 Share this content via...

If we could get routes to you megalithic, would you be willing to help in plotting the routes?
 Share this content via...
megalithic #7 Posted January 26, 2010 Sure i would, as long as you can send me the route a couple of days beforehand. I reckon i'll only be attending a handful of the walks but i'm happy to do it anyway.
 Share this content via...

Well, I've got to whip some people into shape first,... & into the 21st Century before we can get going But we'll get there..... before the next century , hopefully! I'll keep you posted! scoobz #9 Posted January 26, 2010 You're flogging a dead horse if you're going to try and get me to use technology to lead walks! Luddite I think is the term. However, I have absolutely no objections whatsoever to anyone else taking over if you feel this will make the walks better. However.........with this role, they'll also have to turn up every week, keep an eye on everyone, make sure that any fast walkers are 'reined-in', and slow walkers looked after. Oh, and also that they try and talk to every single person on the walk at some point.
 Share this content via...

All megalithic has asked for is a map of the route to put on his gps prior to a walk taking place. This is something I like to have as well - makes me feel better if I can see where I'm going. Doesn't make any difference to the walk, - or who leads it. We all have our quirks:D
 Share this content via...
megalithic #11 Posted January 26, 2010 Hemlock is right Scoobz, all i'm asking for is a preview of the route so i can study it before we set off, the easiest way to do this is plot it on a online /offline map and save the file as a gpx file which can be sent to others and uploaded to a gps device if they also wish to preview it. It'll also give a quiet "beep" when we reach certain critical points along the route to reassure you your still on track and haven't took a wrong turn. This is no slight on your ability to direct the walk at all, i asked about this before i ever met you and it's something i often do anyway as a back up to the map and compass. sorry if i caused any confusion or offense. megalithic #12 Posted January 26, 2010 Btw, given my interest in all things "rocky" had i had a preview of Sundays walk i'd have strode off in front for 5 minutes as we approached the crags to get some pics of the dragons cave, this way i could have done so without holding anyone up and added something of interest for myself en route, not that the walk wasn't interesting in it's own right.
