There is a North/South divide in Sheffield. Shame on us!

The government cash I referred to was for playground equipment in deprived areas. There was a number of set criteria, including current absence of playground equipment, number of children in the 8-13 bracket living in the locality, and various indices of deprivation.

Arbourthorne met all the relevnt criteria. I fail to understand how Millhouses Park met the relevant criteria, especially when it already has play facilities, including a skate park. It's not "inverted snobbery" at all. It's about a fair allocation of the government cash. Millhouses Park already has some play equipment, whereas there is nothing at all in Arbourthorne.

I have just seen a small news article about the distribution of this money in the Sheffield Telegraph. It answered my question which you tellingly didn't - where the rest of the money went. The areas listed were pretty much all the ones people would probably define as 'deprived'. And Millhouses was the only area that you might say was a 'better off' part of the city ('deprived' and 'better off' being highly subjective terms of course) to get any of the money. According to the article, 23 different locations are to get some of this money - that seems quite good. You say "Arbourthorne met all the relevnt criteria" - we don't know if there were other places that met the criteria and there just wasn't enough money to go round. You also say "it's not always the case that deprived areas of the city gets money for parks and recreation grounds, as my experience testifies". Well, as I can see from the newspaper article, it is very much deprived areas that will benefit from this money. You gave us a rather misleading account of what happened.

Mod note

This was an interesting thread, can we please keep the one-liners and chit-chat for the I'm Bored section?

Thanks

Has anyone noticed that Hollinsend Park and Richmond Park are places without proper equipment (a few quids worth to ease consciences), although the Friends of Richmond Park have been battling for the past 3 years to get it sorted. There is no proper park in Woodthorpe at all, a fantastic park was systematically removed by the council rather than repair it which finally disappeared 10 years ago.

The North/ South divide is evident when you head up Ecclesall or Burngreave where thousands of pounds have been continually pumped into parks. The Lib Dems need to revisit this and instead of wasting money on ridiculous schemes they ought to invest in parks more. I take my daughter to Endcliffe as it is the only proper park other than Norfolk Park in the city, accesible, well equipped and well used and essentially with a cafe and toilets.

Someday the Council of whatever party will finally realise that investing in parks properly which includes paying for real equipment, investing in maintenance and supporting parks staff with budgets and people will have a positive impact on families and young people. I'm sure there will be people that disagree with me but this is a "public soapbox" and l'm airing my opinions here!

I'm not sure if the Cafe at Endcliffe is part of the Centre, but Endcliffe is a private cafe, they just pay rent to the Council. This is something which happens in 'better off' areas - people will bid for the lease from the council as they know people will use the Cafe (in other words money to spend). This has a massive impact on the park in terms of its appearance and atmosphere. Graves has new management now, and there is of course the cafe at Millhouses and Rivelin.

There is also a cafe at Norfolk Park, or at least there was when I used to live up there. I don't think it's a "private" facility though, I believe it's run by the Friends. RedRobbo may be able to confirm this.

Either way it's a useful addition to the park, and a good way of raising revenue for the park.

It's a great cafe - I don't think it aims to make a profit, I would think any money would go back into the Centre.

With the private cafes many of them run Bistro nights and specialist events. Who would have thought people would pay up to £30 a head to have dinner at a park cafe next to a smelly boating lake, but plenty do and from what I hear they are wonderful nights with massive waiting lists!
