Jacko v Prince. Was Jacko King of pop?

Recommended Posts

You're comparing a hugely talented musician with an equally talented dancer. Both are incredible in their own way but I most certainly wouldn't class Prince's music as pop.

Sure, both are decent songwriters but if you're a musician like I am, you look at Prince with your jaw wide open; if it's dance you're into then no doubt Jacko's moves will have the same affect on you.

However, I am beginning to think that most of MJ's output is timeless whereas some of Prince's stuff sounds a bit old nowadays. 1999 was on the radio a couple of days back and I think it's aged badly.

Having said that, did Rocky Robin ever sound relevant?!

By far Michael Jackson!

the riff in dirty diana is amazing and the video for smooth criminal is still amazing

Prince was always just weird to me, although its weird saying that when comparing him to michael jackson:loopy:

his songs are ok when other people sing them

Prince for me is the best.

Jackson seems to need collaborators to do his best work. I believe that most of his best sucessful solo stuff was down to the brilliance of quincy jones. For the last decade he has not done anything of note apart from make an embarrasment of himself.

Whereas Prince just keeps churning good stuff out. He himself manages new artists and writes them songs. He is a one man industry and a class act.

I love it when people try to compare artists to Michael Jackson, the positives in songwriting, singing ability, performance, music video's, concerts and selling ability lie deep in the MJ camp.

Prince is good, but nowhere near MJ. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, Jacksons music is timeless, Prince's music is abit outdated.

Only one King of Pop, Rock and Soul - Michael Jackson all the way!

Perhaps you'd care to share which rock songs MJ ever produced in order for him to be termed the king of rock?

Comparing MJ to Prince is like comparing the Sun to Brave New World - more people have read the Sun but that doesnt make it better now, does it? I personally wouldnt even put MJ on the same level as Madonna, who has maintained a creative edge for three decades. Jacksons biggest career move for the last twenty years was dying. Nuff said.

to be fair, if you look at some of those tracks online they are described as "rock" or "pop rock" songs

Good response to an answered question.

So that must mean songs like 'November Rain' by Guns and Roses and 'Wind of Change' by the Scorpions will also raise a snigger from you?.. because they can't be rock - can they?

Michael Jackson - King of Pop, Rock & Soul!
