Linesman   10 #2 Posted December 14, 2009 Hi, I am researching my family history and recently Found out that my late uncle served on this ship. Searched the Internet but can't find a ships crews list Anywhere. Small possibility but wondered if anyone had any memories of this ship. Thanks  Crews were constantly changing, Dido class cruisers were if I remember correctly designed for anti aircraft defence with similar main guns to those used as secondaty armament on the KGV class Battleships. Greybeard   10 #3 Posted December 14, 2009 I remember her. In 1957 she was anchored next to her sister ship the Cleopatra off Whale Island in Portsmouth harbour.  Broken up in 1958 according to this site...  http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/hms_dido.htm  If you check out some of the Google links for HMS Dido you may find some crew lists. cher   10 #4 Posted December 15, 2009 Thank you so very much for trying to help me. I always thought that my Uncle served on submarines In the war but don't know for sure. Then when I went to his funeral service it was mentioned that he served on HMS Dido and something to do with the gold run to the USA. My history of the war is sadly not all should be as I Was born in 1955 and guess I should have asked More questions when I was growing up. No one from the family left to ask so trying to find out myself. Very proud of my Uncle and all the men in the forces In the past and today who give up so much for us. Thank you guess I might also might be searching For a submarine just wish I knew how to locate a crew list that might give me years he served with this ship. Nice shot on that link, as you can see the main armament configuration rahter was unusual with high angle guns particularly suited for anti aircraft work. Greybeard   10 #6 Posted December 15, 2009 Hi cher, if the story of the Dido and the 'gold run' were related at the funeral service then someone in the family must have recollections of it.  I believe up to 1972 RN personnel took their service records with them when they were discharged, so if your uncle's records still exist they will probably be with a member of his immediate family.
