First South Yorkshire - January 2010 fares increase

Recommended Posts

Adult single rises from £1.80 to £1.95

I can't ever remember a bus fare ending in 5p before.

Had enough of F*rst. I'm going to be walking home a lot more from now on...

You can usually save around £1.80 by walking home behind the bus instead of catching it.

If you want to save even more money walk home behind a taxi; depending on how far away you live you may save yourself a £10 fare.

Hope that helps!

But sometimes you can wait for ages for a taxi going your way. It's madness.

God! How dare they! Today I paid 1.50 from Crookes to town (because I was so cold). If I could have waited longer it would have only cost me 1.80 RETURN with Stagecoach.

It will be cheaper to buy long johns, fur-lined gloves and wait a few minutes for the competition who are comfier, warmer and cleaner. First will lose out.

It's about time someone in power pulled their finger out and took away all bus routes from First. They don't have a god-given right to run those routes and the way they treat us is scandalous; reducing services, not running scheduled services, charging us substantially more for the privelige than other cities like Manchester for the same thing etc.

How on Earth do they justify increasing the Sheffield Day 'Saver' by 20% to the same price as a SY one? 10% for a Weekly 'Saver'?

It's no longer worth me going by bus instead of car. How stupid is that?

I think that First are fast becoming a joke in South Yorkshire. Look at when the strikes were happening, how did First repay its "customers"? That's right it didn't, after all they could have offered a days free travel or something. Manchester recently did it with the tram network after months of work that took place.

All First are bothered about is money and not providing a service. It's about time the SYPTE grew some balls and did something about this.

Of course there going to put the fares up.:D

The Lib-Dem council have stoped them cutting the bus service down so this is them sticking 2 fingers up to the people of Sheffield :D

Time to start e-mailing complaints to the Star and your local MP again :D

I understand that these increases affect all bus users and am happy for all of you 'would be' bus users who will now be travelling by car because it is cheaper. Spare a thought though, for those of us who live down Abbeydale Road and work at the NGH but don't drive. I have no choice but to use buses to get to work, worse still, it is only First who run services on that route. They are effectively holding passengers to ransom who have no other choice if they want to get to and from work. It's extortionate and completely unacceptable, yet totally predictable and, I fear, inevitable.

This is their reaction to it:

Cllr Ian Auckland, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport and Streetscene said

"Frankly I'm outraged at this plan. The FirstBus approach seems to be based on a shrinking network with fewer passengers paying more and more for a worse service, with the taxpayer struggling to plug a few gaps. As far as I'm concerned this is a bus service with the destination 'dead end'. Sheffield deserves better.

"This will be a huge blow to passengers who rely on public transport to get around Sheffield. As a Council we will not be entering into any kind of agreement with bus companies that involves unjustified fare increases or service reductions. Sheffielders expect, and deserve, better than that.

"We have the Tories to blame for privatising buses in the first place. However, it is nothing short of a national scandal that since 1997 the Labour Government have sat back and done nothing whilst private companies exploit bus passengers. It's high time that the buses were brought back into the control of local people.

"As a Council that is what we are trying to do, but Labour inaction and Tory hostility to our plans may scupper this."

I agree it's totally out of order. However, its not inevitable.

If we had a Government with the minerals to stand up to them and regulate the buses then we wouldnt have this problem. You have to ask why Labour have done nothing since 1997.
