lucylastic   10 #26 Posted April 6, 2010 To Owlinaus as far as I can remember the Copestakes lived at 141 in 1966, I think you had a sister, Judith?. The Sandall family is listed as living at 143 since before the 1911 census at that time 143 was a shop 'H Sandall Confectioners'. al_partridge   10 #27 Posted April 6, 2010 I was born and raised at 202 Northfield Road. My father was the listed Jack Barraclough. Sadly, he is no longer with us. What wonderful childhood memories the list of shops have invoked and I thank you so much for all your hard work. I remember that, in the mid 60's, next door (no: 200) was a hairdressers, and prior to that was owned/rented by Mr. and Mrs. Stringer. Then Netherfield Road and 198 had the most wonderful smells any shop could have. It was a mixture of carbolic soap, mothballs, firelighters (the white sticks) and shoe polish. Heaven. Yes! I really did like the smell. lol. Carrack's son and Mr. Savage's son teamed up to start a group. They eventually decided on a name. 'Def Leppard'. My claim to fame?....... I had to be at school and some idiot woke me up in the small hours of the morning singing and playing a guitar. I was annoyed and opened my window and shouted out something like , 'Will you shut that row up, I'm trying to get some sleep!!!' At which, Joe Cocker moved on. Absolutely a true story, .....how was I to know??? :-)  Paul Carrack became a singer, but he was nothing to do with Def Leppard.  My dad was mates with Joe Cocker when they were growing up, he often stayed at my grandparents on Truswell Avenue
 Share this content via...

pippadee   10 #30 Posted May 3, 2015 I think it's always been in the same position, I'm sure I've seen it on a 1900, map. Certainly been there to my personal knowledge for the past 60, odd years. A separate flat has been created so maybe the numbers have been changed
 Share this content via...

hillsbro   32 #35 Posted May 4, 2015 ...The "Sine Electrical Co. Ltd." is shown at No 104 from 1951.Yes, I remember this firm - they moved to Fulwood Road at Broomhill (next to Boot's). If the post office was ever at No 104 Crookes, it must have been a purely temporary move and (to judge from the directories I have) it would have been some time between 1941 and 1948.
