sheffandy   24 #13 Posted December 13, 2009 I was born and raised at 202 Northfield Road. My father was the listed Jack Barraclough. Sadly, he is no longer with us. What wonderful childhood memories the list of shops have invoked and I thank you so much for all your hard work. I remember that, in the mid 60's, next door (no: 200) was a hairdressers, and prior to that was owned/rented by Mr. and Mrs. Stringer. Then Netherfield Road and 198 had the most wonderful smells any shop could have. It was a mixture of carbolic soap, mothballs, firelighters (the white sticks) and shoe polish. Heaven. Yes! I really did like the smell. lol. Carrack's son and Mr. Savage's son teamed up to start a group. They eventually decided on a name. 'Def Leppard'. My claim to fame?....... I had to be at school and some idiot woke me up in the small hours of the morning singing and playing a guitar. I was annoyed and opened my window and shouted out something like , 'Will you shut that row up, I'm trying to get some sleep!!!' At which, Joe Cocker moved on. Absolutely a true story, .....how was I to know??? :-)   Hi I know your family! I lived on Netherfield Rd and knew Sean? Wasnt Jack married to Sheila? or is my memory playing tricks? Alarna   10 #16 Posted December 23, 2009 Hi Sheffandy. My mother and father were called Jack and Cath Barraclough. Sean was my son. I too remember the Blanksbys. I used to play with Margaret and I understand she still lives there. My close friend lived on Bole Hill Lane. She is called Valerie Johnson. The Miller sisters and I were inseperable and they lived on Coombe Road. (if Lorraine or Susan are reading this, please get in touch). It's lovely to take a walk down memory lane. :-)
 Share this content via...
sheffandy   24 #17 Posted December 24, 2009 Hi, I mentioned this thread to my mum, she was right about your mum's name and I was wrong! No idea where Sheila came from! lol. She well remembers your family too, (you had a sister, yes?) How is Sean? Did you have a daughter too? Memory trying to remember from years ago!  I well remember playing on Netherfield Rd with Sean and a girl called Joanne Middleton (still around here)in the long hot summer holidays at hide and seek, cricket and lots of other street games that we would no longer be able to play now due the large increase of street parking there. Hope you are well.
 Share this content via...

ukpetes31 Â Â 10 #20 Posted January 8, 2010 I am a descendant of the Stothard family ( coal merchants lydgate lane) from Crookes and lived in crookes until 12 years ago, so found this list very interesting. The Brufton family at no 102 owned the post office, 102, 104, r/o 104 (Mrs Edna Wiseman the tenant was my nans sister), they also owned a number of property in the school road area. Miss Brufton a school mistress lived on Selbourne Road Crosspool my nan was her friend and also her cleaner. When Edna died i took over the tenancy of r/o 104 Crookes it was 1 room downstairs and 2 bedrooms and bathroom upstairs there was no attic. There was a cellar the door was in the kitchen/living room and down a few step there was 2 more door,s one led into the shop at the front but was bricked up on the shop side the other to the cellar, in the cellar there was a door way bricked up which would have led into the post office this cellar had a ledge all round it supposingly this was used as a store room for the shop. there was also a well and when it rained the cellar flooded which was bad in winter as i had a coal fire as the coal was in the cellar . I eventually moved out of the property back to my family home on Stannington View Road as it was a nightmare living next to the noisy electrical shop when i had a baby. The lady who originally owned the house we had on Stannington View had a shop on crookes but don't know which it was and can't remember her name but it must have been around the 1950s or 60s. If anybody can give me any info on the stothard family i would be gratefull. Â Â I too am a Stothard and still live at Crookes. I know my mum does a family tree so if you let me know what info you are looking for, I will then pass it on.
 Share this content via...
