Meter is provided and checked by the council isn't it?

Everytime I've been in one the meter has been used

As far as I know Sheffield has fixed the taxi fares . Licensed taxi operators are bound by these transport fees for rides in the core area of Sheffield. The vehicle mounted meter ensures that the taxi price is neither higher nor lower than mandated

I do not know if these are the up to date prices and I am not sure what rights you have if the driver does not use his meter apart from complaining to the licensing people but unless you know the price why would you allow him not to use the meter

I cant ever recall being in a black cab without the meter on.

Maybe things have changed and become better regulated in the 12 years since the this thread was started?

I don't know now as i very rarely catch a black cab but 25 years ago when i did the meters were more mechanical and i used to notice that it went on a digit every time we went over a bump.

I think if i had to get one now traveling on herries drive i would have to sell my house.

The taximeters are maintained by the council and are sealed and cant be tampered with.
