Football game abandoned after 45 minutes: what happens now?

Recommended Posts

The game has to run for 70 minutes minimum.

If it less than this then it has to be replayed.

I recall a few years back when Real Madrid were playing and the match was abandoned after 80+ minutes due to a bomb scare with the score at 1-1.

They replayed the final 10 minutes a few days later and Madrid won 2-1. Doubtful any away fans made the trip!

Dundee Utd v Rangers this afternoon. Rangers lead 1-0 at half time, but there has been that much rain the game is abandoned.

Only 45 minutes were played and I think you have to play 60 for result to stand, so what happens now? Do they replay starting from scratch or replay second half at 1 nil?

In Italy replay the match from the point of interruption.

There was one league game where the match was abandoned after 40 minutes and the result stood at 0-0.

May 1985 Bradford City v Lincoln City.

I think Barnsley fans might be a tad unhappy about the rules :)

Heard ex-referee, Dermot Gallagher, supporting the above view yesterday.

Only if the competition rules allow for it.

From FIFA, via the Football League.

The important bit:

ABANDONED MATCH

An abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules provide otherwise.

Nowt about it being timebound.
