Plant's don't feel pain because they don't have a nervous system like animals do.

Well, I suppose what I am angling at is your definitive statement is all well and good, but it depends on your frame of reference. i.e, if you were a plant, you might have a completely different opinion.

It is deeply culturebound to assume that because certain things have no *recognisable* nervous system, or electrocolloidal intercellular communciation matrix (as all plants do) that it is somehow insensate.

Read a bit of Lyall Watson on sympathetic behaviour in Geraniums, including using them as 'witnesses', and you'll see what I mean - don't be so quick to dismiss ideas like plants feeling pain simply because they show no obvious or occult signs.

edit I was trying to save space, not waste it.

I don't think that plants can feel pain.

But you need to be cautious with trees. The spirits of the dead live in trees, as do dryads, and (of course) witches. If you damage or kill a tree you are harming or murdering its inhabitants. You must never do anything to an elder without asking the permission of the inhabiting witch.

Is it my imagination ... or does the SF have rather more than it's fair share of people with a keen interest in the paranormal !?

A few relevant ‘items’:

Stevie Wonder

Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants

I can't conceive the nucleus of all

Begins inside a tiny seed

And what we think as insignificant

Provides the purest air we breathe

But who am I to doubt or question the inevitable being

For these are but a few discoveries

We find inside the Secret Life of Plants

A species smaller than the eye can see

Or larger than most living things

And yet we take from it without consent

Our shelter, food, habilment

But who am I to doubt or question the inevitable being

For these are but a few discoveries

Wwe find inside the Secret Life of Plants

But far too many give them in return

A stomp, cut, drown, or burn

As is they're nothing

But if you ask yourself where would you be

Without them you will find you would not

And some believe antennas are their leaves

That spans beyond our galaxy

They've been, they are and probably will be

Who are the mediocrity

But who am I to doubt or question the inevitable being

For these are but a few discoveries

We find inside the Secret Life of Plants

For these are but a few discoveries

We find inside the Secret Life of Plants

Plants have as much right to be on this planet as we do. Afterall, we support each other in the way that we exhale what they 'inhale', and vice versa. Treat plants as if they were human beings. They have rights too you know. Just wait until the 2054 Plant and Tree Rights Act comes into place.

But do you think trees and other plant life feel pain when you cut them?

The truth is that no one knows, although trees and plants are alive so it is quite possible they do feel pain. A tree has almost the same metabolism as a human being and must feel something as it is being cut down, I have heard it said that the Mandrake plant screams when it is pulled up by it's roots.
