Anyone worked at Firth Browns?

Hi Brian and All,

 

Glad you enjoyed the pics. Brian :thumbsup:

 

Does anyone know where this is?? It's listed as part of Cammell Lairds old works. Don't recall the renewed brickwork. Maybe a few apexes have been removed.

Think it may be on the right hand side of Carlisle Street East past the Newman Road junction when going towards Upwell Street and maybe opposite the end of Adsetts Street.

Or maybe on the right hand side of Savile Street past Sutherland Street towards the Wicker. Don't think this had been Cammell Laird though.

Is it on Saville street above the melting shop going towards town. I think the first aid post was through the large gate.

Hi Melv,

 

This 1985 pic shows the Siemens melt shop immediately past the clock and on towards the crossroads with Sutherland Street. I can't see any likeness with the buildings on the pic on my last post. That's why I wondered if it was between Sutherland Street and the Wicker goods station. :huh:

Hi Melv,

 

This 1985 pic shows the Siemens melt shop immediately past the clock and on towards the crossroads with Sutherland Street. I can't see any likeness with the buildings on the pic on my last post. That's why I wondered if it was between Sutherland Street and the Wicker goods station. :huh:

Didn't work at Firth-Brown's but did live in the area. I thought Cammel-Lairds in that area was at Sutherland Street and Carlisle Street late to become ESC's Cyclops works and now occupied by a firm called ATI. Also the stretch on Carlisle Street East from Newhall Road to Upwell Street was ESC property (later British Steel). Firth-Brown's works on Carlisle Street East ended (started ?) at Newhall Road.

Started in the apprentice training school (Syd May days) then on the plant as an apprentice fitter for the rest of my apprenticeship. Finished up in the forge maintenance shop with Richard Caborn, Terry Hallam, Terry Darling, Les Crapper, Ray Turner, Len Ashton etc. Then went onto time and motion (kinda mistake) but got to be a maintenance foreman from there. Worked for the longest time with Steve Buck, Wilf Aram, the Matthews brothers Steve and Paul, Ray Bond, Eric Wragg, Johnny Leach. Anyone still around from that era?

I think that on Carlisle Street East Cammell Lairds, which eventually became ESC, stretched just between Upwell Street and Newhall Road.

Firth Browns ran from Newhall Road to Spital Hill in my time.

I understood that, earlier, Kayser Ellisons had some of the property ending at Sutherland Street. See my pic here....

I worked in the offices from age 15 in 1959 until 1966 and came across Wilf Aram occasionally when I was an office junior in Progress and Planning at 36 gate on Savile Street East in 1959 to'61. I think he was a foreman at that time. At least he wore a brown smock.:)

 

I believe that he became works manager in the mid 60s.

Peter, did Firth-Brown's actually run as far as Spital Hill ? as the works on Carlisle Street ( on left towards Spital Hill from Sutherland Street) was the ESC Cyclops works, the other side of Carlisle Street (not East) was a few different firms including Morgan Fairest.

There were two Wilf Arams, dad and son old wilf was the manager of the machineshops and wilf (my age) was an electrician. We all started in the apprentice training school in Aug of 64.

FB's did go all the way to Spital Hill by the time we had GFM installed just past Norfolk rolling Mills. I was the first maintenance foreman on GFM. Went to Austria to help dismantle the GFM and get it brought to FB. Ian Marshall was a young fitter at the time that went with me.

Anyone hear of a poor workman who fell into a molten metal transporter bucket, back in the 50's I think. The story went that, of course, the metal could not be used, but I don't know how it was dealt with.

 

The company scrapped the melt and made a polished "brick" from it for his wife. He fell off the stage in melting while tapping the furnace. I believe he was throwing bags of guntapite?? in the melt to seal it.

Ulley reservoir was about 10 mins drive from my then fiance's parents' house at Bramley on the outskirts of Rotherham. We married in March 1966. Occasionally we would have a pleasant drive to the reservoir after tea at their house.

 

Here's some info. I remember driving past regularly when the cracks scare was on in 2007 as I lived nearby at Aston then....

Yes I remember the 37 gates well. Central Warehouse handled the shipping of steel to clients. It would be delivered to us from the shops by lorry, or by rail for the biggest forgings we handled, which could weigh up to around six tons each. After weighing, to determine the type of transport required for delivery, items were ''marked up'' by the men on the shop floor. I would contact transport dept to arrange delivery to clients. This was done by contractors such as BRS. Here's a preserved Leyland Octopus of the era which I remember is the same type as the one handled by a driver named Don. I can see him in my minds eye now after over 50 years!....

I occasionally rode with drivers through 37 gate and up to transport office at Norfolk Bridge to complete late documents.

One of our Lister drivers was Harry Ransom, and they were always kept in the Central maintenance shop just up from the Corner Pin. We looked after the tyre mill, and forging hammers etc. Also the heavy lifters were in there.

swowls agrees with me on his post 681 that Firth Browns did go all the way to Spital Hill at some point in time. However from the pic below listed as Carlisle Street Burngreave it seems it had indeed, as you have said, been Cammell Lairds and then ESC at some points in the past.

this time, i keep looking at it and i know i've seen it but where, i even

know all them details on the photo. But can't think where it was.

Firstly, i dont remember any railway line running across the road on

Saville St. Yours Brian.

I remember clearly the Scammell Scarab. When I was in Central Warehouse, 1964 to '66, I sometimes offloaded materials transported from light machine shops when acting as standby crane driver....

The GFM plant FB installed after 1978 for over 12 million pounds, was on the triangular (kinda) plot of land that went from the Norfolk Bar Rolling Mills that spanned Sutherland ST towards the Wicker Arches. That part of FB eventually came under Sheffield Forgemasters as I believe ( I had left for the US by then) which in essence was English Steels. I was the maintenance foreman at the time for Norfolk bar, and after help dismantle the GFM machine in Austria in August 78 was the maintenance foreman on GFM. Around that time Albert Hockley, Ray Jeffcock, Mr Wright were the "Engineers".
