Anyone worked at Firth Browns?

Recommended Posts

Hi Brian, hope you're ok.

In response to your post number 660. I can't see on the film the Corner Pin pub, which is on Carlisle Street East.

At 1 min 12 secs into the film is Savile Street East with the big clock on the left and then the Victoria Hotel at the corner of Norroy Street on the right.

Here for convenience, is the film again....

--------------

Some while back i was looking on Sheffield Pictures and saw a pic

of Edward Heath, he was coming out of 37 Gate with some visitors

i think it was in the 80s, i wrote the number down but now lost it.

Did you ever see that pic. Your Brian.

This is how it looks now filled in with the lighter brickwork to the right of the first floor bay window.

Hi Brian,

The photo of Ted Heath opposite 37 gate had puzzled me for a few years as it is described as a visit to Firth Brown Tools Speedicut Works Carlisle Street East. However, I had never seen the painted 37 on the wall until you have just mentioned it :) I now recognise that he is apparently exiting his car to enter what I assume is FB Tools works opposite 37 gate and next to our canteen on Savile Street East, in about 1970. Or maybe he's nipping in the canteen for some Yorkshire Pud :hihi:

While preparing to move house I found my father's long service certificate, which he was given in 1965 after 25 years with the company. In case it's of interest to anyone, here is a photo:

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/FirthBrownCertificate.jpg

My dad, "Ted" Robinson, was an electrical fitter at Carwood Road from 1940 until he retired through ill-health in 1980. He was also a skilled first-aider (see post #115 on this thread). I remember him telling me about going to collect his 25-year certificate from the managing director. As he was welcomed into the plush office, he apologised for being in his overalls, having come straight from repairing a big motor. The managing director* said "Never mind, Ted, where there's muck there's money".

* Can anyone tell me the managing director's name? His signature has faded on the certificate, but it might be "A. Broadhead" or something similar.

Hi hillsbro,

Just had a look at the first few pages on this thread.

Sorry if I'm a little late responding :)

Just in case you didn't get a response to your request re the name of the Managing Director at Firth Browns, it was Mr Arthur Broomhead. I worked there in 1959/66 and he was MD then.

I never saw inside his office but remember well seeing him occasionally on the Directors Wood panelled corridor in the Head Offices buildings on Savile Street East during 1959/60. I was an office junior aged 15 then and one of my duties meant I was allowed to use the corridor, but only for that one specific task. Mr Broomhead's office was on the first floor a couple of windows past the Main Entrance with the canopy over in my 1990 snap below, taken during demolition. The part of the building immediately to the right of the canopy still exists as the President Buildings....

Here he is centre pic at the opening of the new Research Laboratories in 1967.

You should now be able to pick him out on these pics.....

Hi Peter - thanks for your reply, and for solving the mystery of the name of the MD!.:) It's also interesting to see the photos; I remember once passing the President Buildings and thinking that it used to be the Firth Brown offices, so it's nice to have this confirmation. The area looks so different now, compared with how it was.

My dad always spoke highly of Firth Brown's despite all the changes that he saw in his 40 years there.

Yes, I always felt looked after in what were my early years aged 15 to 22 in 1959 to 1966, with a years absence at Sheffield Smelting aged 20.

Hi Brian and All,

Glad you enjoyed the pics. Brian

Does anyone know where this is?? It's listed as part of Cammell Lairds old works. Don't recall the renewed brickwork. Maybe a few apexes have been removed.

Think it may be on the right hand side of Carlisle Street East past the Newman Road junction when going towards Upwell Street and maybe opposite the end of Adsetts Street.

Or maybe on the right hand side of Savile Street past Sutherland Street towards the Wicker. Don't think this had been Cammell Laird though.
