Andy C   85 #1 Posted October 15, 2009 The annual Woodthorpe Hall Cider Run is a joint event between Sheffield & Chesterfield branches of the Campaign for Real Ale to mark national traditional Cider month.  We pop down to Woodthorpe Hall in Holmesfield on their apple pressing weekend and meet local cider maker Dick Shepley, see the old fashioned apple press in action and try some of the cider.  In a spoof of a certain annual feature of the wine world, we then load a couple of tubs of cider onto a stretcher to carry as quickly as possible a hand delivery of cider to the Royal Oak pub in the neighbouring village of Millthorpe, where we drink some more cider and have lunch.  After lunch we walk back up to Holmesfield where we have the option of getting the bus down the road to the Jolly Farmer pub in Dronfield Woodhouse where a choice of ciders from across the UK are available to drink.  All these pubs sell real ale as well as real cider.  If you fancy joining us, we are meeting in Holmesfield Church car park at 11:30 then walking down the path to the hall.  To get there by bus from Sheffield catch TM Travel 293 from Flat Street at 10:27 and get off outside the Hearty Oak pub in Dronfield Woodhouse, from where you can walk up to Holmesfield or alternatively connect into bus service 14. A TM Travel all day ranger ticket costs £3.00.
 Share this content via...
