WHo do I report a nasty/aggressive/dangerous dog to?

Recommended Posts

My 9 month old lab was attacked my a larger dog (I don't know the breed) yesterday, long story short, he's now got an awful infection, a temperature of 104, and a nasty bite wound. As well as now being being very nervous. He's now got a long treatment regime to look forward too.

The owner told me at the time (after my hysterical screaming at him to control his dog) that "he won't hurt him love". The owner knows that the dog is nasty as I've seen how he reacts when he see's others dog walking.

Anyway, my question is - who do I report him to? As angry as I am, I'm not out to see his dog destroyed etc, I simply want him to be made to keep the dog on a lead, and be muzzled when out in public, for the safety of other dogs and or people/kids.

Thank you.

My gut reaction is to speak to the Dog Warden at the Council. There's also the RSPCA who can give advice.

Sorry to hear about your dog :( Hope he gets better quickly. I'm not sure who you can report it to apart from the police and they most likely will tell you it's not there area to deal with, you may be lucky and if you know where he lives they might have a word.

As a owner of a dog that used to be very dog aggressive I know how much work goes into controlling them, I would never walk mine without a muzzle (still don't just incase) and he now only goes off lead if he knows the dogs around him as I know (after a year of training) that he will now just play with them.

Unfortunately he has been attacked a few times by other dogs that run up to him when he's on lead and muzzled, luckily for him always much smaller and I've been able to kick them off, so he's got away with minor bites. This really does not help his fear aggression or his training though  So I can understand why people are reluctant to let their dog wear a muzzle.

All aggressive dogs should be on lead, I know there is no easy answers to stopping them being the way they are.... but also if other dog owners let their well adjusted dogs run up to strange dogs that are on lead they need their head examining :)

Thank you for your response and your well wishes, and I hope he'll be well again soon too. I can understand, reading this, as to why people would not like to muzzle their dogs, but safety has to come first in my view. As you also say, a lead is essential at the very least. My dog didn't actually run up to him, he was pounced upon, but again, I do see your point of view with regards dogs who are not on a lead. As dog owners we all need to be responsible in all situations. Which is all I'm asking of this particular owner, but he seems to need a little encouragement.:)

Thank you for all your responses. I've emailed the RSPCA, so hopefully they will point me in the right direction. My priority is of course to get my lab well soon, and hopefully ensure that this doesn't happen again, or to anyone else.

Totally agree, I wish more people who have aggressive dogs would make them wear a muzzle (as well as lead), I'm sure a lot of dogs that turn this way is due to them being attacked when puppies like yours. (as well as incorrect socialising when younger)

I'm sure there were never as many aggressive dogs in the past when I have owed dogs or maybe owners were more responsible then :)

The police won't respond to dog issues anymore. They will pass it to the dog warden to deal with. Sheffield Homes (if the owner is a tenant) may be able to do something through their anti social behaviour team if the dog is causing problems, but that will involve a long drawn out process and diary keeping. As this is an isolated incident you're best speaking to the RSPCA and the dog warden for advice.

Please don't let this put you off taking your puppy out. We have had months of wonderful and enjoyable walks with our lab, and we'll be having many more. I adore taking my dog out for walks, its a wonderful experience, and this I hope! Is just an unfortunate experience. :)

I was like this with my cavie-still am in fact. Try not to do it but if you are really concerned they are small enough to pick up. I have only done this once when a GSD flipped her over and the owners didnt care.
