Derren Brown predicts the lottery numbers..

Recommended Posts

I'm a big fan of Derren's work - I won't hide that fact at all.

Because of him, I've taken the interest further, into cold reading, NLP, and the various other scams used by "mediums" to con people out of their money. It's fascinating stuff.

This Wednesday, Derren Brown is apparently going to tell us the lottery numbers, before the draw takes place. Channel 4, at 10.30. The draw is live at 10.35pm.

Whether it'll work, I don't know. If it does, well it's either very scary and supernatural, or there's a lot more to it. There's a second show on Friday night explaining how it's done.

If it works though, and the man openly admits he has no "psychic" powers, how can people actually believe in fortune tellers? If it works, a man will have openly shown that he can predict a random future event with no "psychic" ability at all. I find that very interesting, and possibly quite timely, given that some charlatan on the Star website claims to have known that Princess Diana was going to die (convenient claim, tied in with her new book maybe?!)

But anyway, anyone watching this or have any thoughts?

The show is called The Events, if you'd like to search for it.

Ahhh I've seen The Events advertised but didn't know what it was about. In the advert it makes out as though he is explaining things he has already done. I love Derren Brown, wish I'd gone to see him at Sheffield when he came, but I didn't :(.

Television illusionist, conjuror and hypnotist Derren Brown has dispelled the mystery over his upcoming series The Events and announced just what they are.

The shows ask viewers to participate as the subliminal genius explores a variety of financial and social situations and aims to crack into the heads, psyche and wallets of people and businesses.

Channel 4 are bringing viewers five live special events to be screened from Wednesday 9 September.

The first of the live programmes sees Derren vying to predict the National Lottery numbers, will be on Wednesday 9 September before a follow up show explaining how he did it and how you may be able to do it in How to Win the Lottery on Friday 11 September.

On Friday 18 September is a show called How to Control the Nation where Derren investigates the world of the subliminal and encourages viewers to take part in the experiment and phone in with their experience.

On Friday 25 September, How to be a Psychic Spy looks at the arms race between the USA and USSR during the Cold War period and asking viewers to participate in a nationwide psychic experiment

The last edition is on Friday 2 October called How to take Down a Casino where Derren promises a special twist.

They will make a million if they pick those numbers as they are the winning ones. However if too many people pick them the cash will be well shared.

Hes a magician, so can't see how he can really predict them. He might be able to convince people he did without doing it (thats how the horse/dogs betting one he did worked - the person who won every bet based on what Darren said thought he could predict the future and then Darren explained how he did it and it was quite clear he predicted nothing and just gave the illusion he had done so to that particular person!).

If he was that good he would have been able to pick the lottery numbers before now and made millions from it. He obviously has not done so and I take this publicity stunt with the largest pinch of salt in the world

As if.....like the gambling program he did!

That was a good programme, since it showed just how the "great tipsters" actually operate. Anything that exposes all these frauds and scams, has to be a good thing.

I think you've missed the point entirely.

Of course he can't predict the future. No one can.

He's showing that it's possible to fool people into thinking that he can. It's an illusion. After all, he's an illusionist. Same way he showed people that seances don't actually talk to the dead, even though he convinced people that that's what he was doing.

That's the point.
