muddycoffee   10 #13 Posted September 7, 2009 In the early 1990s there were many music shops on London road. One of the owners told me that there had been a boom in guitar sales when the mines closed in South yorkshire because many of the ex miners spent redundancy money on expensive guitars and amplifiers. This was the cause of there being so many shops at that time. since then there has been a slow overall reduction in guitar shops. While many good quality cheaper guitars have become available and on line stores like thomann have further reduced the local market for guitar and music stuff. ghost   10 #14 Posted September 7, 2009 Reverb has closed. I suspect most of their other branches will follow at some point. Electro in Doncaster is about the nearest decent store. I have had some good online deals with Digital Village in Birmingham.
 Share this content via...
escort1 Â Â 10 #15 Posted September 7, 2009 One of the problems these days, and iv'e done it myself, people go into a store like Reverb, try out a piece of kit and then go home and order on line alot cheaper. This will kill a lot of smaller high st shops, but its the way things are these days.
 Share this content via...

Linesman   10 #17 Posted September 8, 2009 about 3 or 5 years ago the store on City road was part of a chain. There was another branch on paternoster road opposite the Pop Museum. However it closed because it wasn't making enough money. After that, the city road shop changed its name to The academy of sound. Then a year ago it changed its name again to Reverb. Carlsbro retail outlet became Academy of Sound before Sound Control took over.
 Share this content via...
boboskins   10 #18 Posted September 9, 2009 Sad that a city the size of Sheffield doesn't have a full blown music store when you consider how many decent music stores there were back in the 60s.  There is a decent music store in Sheffield across from Debenhams in the City Centre called Millington Music. But then I would say that coz it's my uncles shop
 Share this content via...

Well I've been in a few music stores in my time but their range of stock beats them all; assuming that is stock and not what they can get. Can you try all these instruments? guitarlad   10 #23 Posted September 20, 2009 Owt on Ebay should be there as it is shipped next day according to the listings, so it's all there. It isn't a typical walk in place like the old Academy, it's kind of specialist and out of the way, so you need to ring ahead and book in really.  Good thing is you can see what's available beforehand, and then arrange to go down when you see something that tickles your fancy. It's very guitar-orientated, not sort of place you'd just pop in for strings but definitely worth a look if you are after summot tasty guitar wise. Terrible thing is "GAS"! ;0)
 Share this content via...
Thewickerman   10 #24 Posted September 20, 2009 Everytime I went in it was empty and the staff were either chatting, playing a guitar etc. Just after the changeover to Reverb, less than a year ago, I went in to check out some very expensive midi sequencing software whilst the member of staff continued playing his keyboard. I didn't buy simply on principle. That's why businesses go tits up!
 Share this content via...
