buck   11 #146 Posted August 21, 2008 Mine was a 1937 Rover 14, which I paid forty quid for. It did 9 miles to a gallon till I cleaned out a ton of sand from its SU carburetter then it did fifteen. It had a crash gearbox so I had to double declutch it, a practise I never gave up after I started driving sync boxes. The rear floor was made of plywood, which had rotted away, so it got pretty wet inside on rainy days. I drove it from my air base in Pembrokeshire to Sheffield on leave, and my mother in law, who could have been called Hyacinth but wasn't, kicked up such a fuss as it sat outside her Greenhill mansion spewing oil all over her driveway, that I sold it to some dealer for 20. docmel   10 #147 Posted August 22, 2008 Maybe it looked like this: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/StandardVanguard.jpg They were lovely cars; my uncle had one until he swopped it for a Jowett Javelin. As docmel wrote, you could imagine a car like that in an American gangster movie, maybe with old Edward G. and Bette Davis.  Thats the one!!! - ours was in black (what else?) but that pic has brought back memories
 Share this content via...

manaman   10 #149 Posted October 5, 2008 My first car was a 1960 Ford Zodiac Mk 2 Lowline. It was duotone sky blue over powder blue (original special order factory colours). The brightwork was chrome plating or stainless steel. It had, a 2553cc straight six engine and a three speed column change gearbox; vacuum windscreen wipers (operating speed ranging from frenetic to virtually nil, dependant upon engine speed); spot light and a fog light; radio; front bench seat and fixed seatbelts for the driver and one front seat passenger. I bought it in 1987 from a family member.  I instantly became very popular with members of the opposite sex, and one of them eventually became my wife. Angus Prune   10 #154 Posted October 8, 2008 My first car - Saab 900XS. Only learned to drive earlier this year (finally, at the age of 35) so I'm still driving it. Bit of a culture shock at first after having learnt in a Corsa, but a lovely motor nonetheless and I intend to drive it until it falls to bits!
