Local Prison over crowded

Recommended Posts

Ok so what i want to know is when does the rehabilitation happen?

These people are locked up for however long.... then they get out and they generally havent changed and often reoffend. This is the problem, most of the prisoners need help with mental health issues otherwise we are not getting anywhere. We are just going round in circles.

I'll agree that some prisoners get luxuries they should not be allowed, or should at least have to work very hard for. Things that many hardworking people on the outside do not have/have access to.

What gets my goat is why people on the outside cannot get the help they need, before they go to prison. Society does not care about a problem till it has arisen, even though society can see the problems arising.

I can definitely agree with that. It's not a piecemeal problem, the whole thing needs to be looked at so it's harder for people to end up in such catastrophic situations. Irresponsible lending has been, I think, a big part of that, and one good thing about the recession is it's highlighted this and we're all a bit more careful of debt and the downward spirals it can create.

My own neo-hippy liberal wishy washy opinion is that as a society, we're all to obsessed with possessions and consumerism; taking a step away from the disposable culture we've adopted would solve a lot of problems, I feel. I'm speaking as a man guiltily obsessed with shiny gadgets. It's not hypocrisy, I know I'm as guilty as anyone.

First of all, I disagree with this - 23 hours in a cell with naught but a bog and a bed - yes. 23 hours in a room with books TV, a playstation, photos, drawing stuff and personal affects, tea making stuff etc- you're having a giraffe!! (and yes I have seen this with my own eyes - some of them look like bedsits and better ones thatn I've seen on the outside!) I've spent longer stretches in my box room as a student with less of that stuff.

Secondly, I've spent some time visiting prisons of various security categories and I have to despute this '23 hours a day' rubbish. At one particular prison I visited they were out of their cells for all meals, had time to go to the shower, had 'association time' in a room with tvs and snooker tables, had education and times in workshops where they either had lessons or worked assembling things or packing vegetables. And also time out of cells when they had other jobs such as cleaners, chefs etc.

Prison is not a nice place primarily due to the people - having to socialise and deal with the scum that ends up there, well, I wouldn't wish that on anyone - the prison staff have to do a horrible job IMHO.

People who say prison isn't easy don't know what they are talking about. It's not hard enough.

i agree with a lot of what you post but it must have been some time back when you saw a playstation

It was 3 weeks ago! They were playing Colin MaCrae rally.

PS: just read the article you linked - it was a PS2 not 3. Sorry for the confusion.

People do not go to prison for nothing. They go there because they have commited serious crimes. The best way to stop reoffending is to make prison life so harsh that they would sooner die than go back to prison. If they die it solves the problem...simple!

Jim, you really have no idea what you're talking about.
