paranoid   10 #26 Posted August 7, 2009 That's still not an unreasonable quote; I'm a named driver on a Peugeot 306 and quotes for that have been in the £1800 region. I'm presuming the MG was your own policy?  yeah, it took a lot of finding! most companies wouldn't insure me full stop. the others wanted around £15k to insure me and the car was only £13k at the time! it took me quite a while to find that quote  it was well worth the effort though. most of my mates at that age had sheds, it was great being 18 years old and bombing to the coast in a sporty convertible with the girlfriend
 Share this content via...
Cyclone   10 #27 Posted August 7, 2009 You guess wrong And (personally), I'd rather a Caterham R500 as a 2nd car, as if it's gonna be impractical...might as well go the whole hog  If the drive is the same in your MX5 as an Elise then there must have been something wrong with the Elise, unless you have a very unusual MX5 (with no suspension). paranoid   10 #28 Posted August 7, 2009 when i had the s2000 my mate had an elise 111s (the newer shape but before they put the toyota engine in them)  to be honest, it looked nice but that was about it. they're pretty quick off the mark, but very clunky and they run out of power quite quickly  a vauxhall vx220 turbo would be a better alternative to an elise imo
 Share this content via...
L00b   441 #29 Posted August 7, 2009 I'm talking about driving, not ride comfort. I said "like", I did not say "identical to". The Elise I drove was a std '98 Mk1, my MX-5 has std suspensions but has been slightly lowered and has a specialist align/geometry tweak. I'm not specifically looking at things like Fs myself - my taste is somewhat more antiquated (and some say laughable) - but as you can understand any hints that could reduce premiums at my age are always worth exploring.  EDIT: To give you an idea; the cheapest quote I can find on an F as a named driver if about £5900. Finding out who you were with could thus represent a considerable saving. Edited August 7, 2009 by Captain Slow
 Share this content via...
Cyclone   10 #32 Posted August 7, 2009 I'm talking about driving, not ride comfort. I said "like", I did not say "identical to". The Elise I drove was a std '98 Mk1, my MX-5 has std suspensions but has been slightly lowered and has a specialist align/geometry tweak.  We're pretty OT, and this is purely subjective, but surely how it drives includes how it feels?  Looks & drives like a Lotus  The only thing I've ever been in that drives like an Elise is a go kart. They are rock hard and corner like they are glued to the road. The MX5 has none of that feel, it's quick, and fun, but IMO a very different drive. The MX5 doesn't bite (as much) easily. Push an Elise over the edge (and that's a long way to push for sure) and you'll be sat in a hedge wondering what went wrong. Push an MX5 and I think you'll be more likely to have a brown pants moment and then carry on to work at the salon  For the record, I was on the verge of changing my Z4 for a Z4M or Alpina, but it's sat on the drive a lot at the moment so I haven't. Cyclone   10 #36 Posted August 7, 2009 They'd have to be a very successful one, maybe a salon owner or celebrity hair stylist.  The top gear boys liked the new Z4, apparently the old one was a bit too edgy and firm for them, the new one is a bit more americanised.
