Djembe - Where to buy one??

Recommended Posts

A Djembe is an african goblet drum, it comes in different sizes and is usually carved out of wood with a goat skin.

Question is - where to buy one?

There's no chance I'd consider buying a drum online, to hand over cash without hearing its sound would be a ludicrous prospect to a drummer, especially as there are many cheap immitations out there.

I even looked all over London at the weekend, Wembly Drum Centre and the famous Denmark Street both came up blanks!

Any ideas?

If you pop into UK Mama - the African restaurant in Broomhill - the owner there runs african drumming workshops and he regularly gets deliveries of high quality djembes imported from West Africa, which he will sell you for a fair price.

Admittedly, i don't think he does djembes but a friend makes very good quality hand drums of various sizes (all by hand - no powertools) right here in Sheffield.

Have a look at some of his drums here:

(he shares a website with his missus who does holistic therapies, so check her bit too)

If you do get in touch, just tell him Gav sent ya:thumbsup:

Go to Knock on Wood in Leeds - you can try before you buy.

Having worked for UK Mama in the past doing drum workshops I'd advise against going there.

Having been to many of his workshops and performed on stage with him, I can safely say that there is no way I would ever work for the guy. Not after seeing the way he treats some of his staff.

But he does sell fairly-priced Djembes and is a very good drummer.
