I first went when I was a kid and have been back a good few times. It's was as good the last time as it was the first. "Spectacular" doesn't get close to doing the place justice. thecliffe   10 #39 Posted April 6, 2018 The road was built hundreds of years ago before they knew about the sub soil problems. It is built on soft ground but they knew nothing of geology at that time.
 Share this content via...
choogling   14 #40 Posted April 6, 2018 Just to add to that bit, have you ever tried getting up Winnets Pass in a 1.1 Escort with 5 adults in the car?  not surprising really it was a four seater.
 Share this content via...

trastrick   866 #43 Posted April 7, 2018 Mam Tor was referred to as "the shivering mountain" in the 50s.  We used to spend a week every year at the Rotary camp up near Lose Hill.  My memory was the constant caravan of Foden Lorries going up and around the hill hauling limestone from the local quarries.  And the occasional landslide.  Also a bar of Blended Chocolate from the tuck shop in the Castleton square and a brand new American soft drink to rival Tizer, Lemonade and Dandelion & Burdock, called Pepsi Cola! It was probably still the proper stuff back then with a slight twist of cocaine.
 Share this content via...
old tup   30 #45 Posted April 7, 2018 On the subject of driving up Winnats Pass when I worked as a driver-salesman for Fletchers in the 80s my journey was the whole of Hope Valley one end to the other!.Three times a week after finishing Castleton I drove my 7ton diesel Ford up Winnats to access customers from Edale to Hope with no problem!.Until one day the plod in a jam sandwhich stopped me and gave me a right dressing down and warned me what would happen if I was spotted again going up there, this pleased me no end as I then had to drive to Hope go all the way up to Edale top and double back putting extra time on my long schedule!.When you need the police their nowhere to be found when you don,t up they pop like magic,oh well its just all sent to try you I suppose!. blackydog   40 #46 Posted April 9, 2018 I want to take my kids up Mam Tor (haven't been up there for years). Am I best getting the train to Edale and walking to Mam Tor? Imagine parking can be horrendous near the Tor itself??
 Share this content via...
Treeman893 Â Â 10 #47 Posted April 9, 2018 You can park right next to the road. Just go up Winnats and turn right at the top. Go down hill to the sharp left hand bend. Turn right into the road signposted no through road. Plenty parking and camera spots and takes you to within 100yds of the collapsed road.
