I'm sure this is a film I should like, all my mates with the same taste in films as me have recommended it to me, but I tried and just couldn't get on with it!

 

I must try again soon.

 

A few years down the line, and it's now my favourite film....!

Definitely my favourite film, loved it since the first time I saw it about 4 years ago after laughing at some of the quotes in Empire mag. 20 odd times later and it's still just as funny. Absolute classic.

It is true that R E Grant doesn't drink (I think he's allergic to alcohol), which is amazing since he plays a great drunk! I recently read his autobiography. Bruce Robinson (director) forced him to get drunk in preparation for the part.

 

As far as I know, this is true. Also, during the lighter fluid scene they put vinegar in the bottle from which Withnail drinks (without Richard knowing), so the reaction you see on film is his genuine reaction to having just drank vinegar. :)
