Say what you will, Sheffield Wednesday has the most unique name in British league football. Of course it is the first to come to mind when Sheffield is mentioned in far flung places.

If you said "Wednesday" in a far flung place then fair enough - if you just say Sheffield, probably more likely to say "oldest club in world" nowadays... certainly since FIFA promoted it a few years ago.

id not looked at it that way -good post fella

It's because you have got so used to it, but can you imagine?

Manchester Monday

Sunderland Saturday

Tottenham Tuesday

:hihi:

Sheffield United is a contradiction in terms, as is Manchester United. Neither city is united in football, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers makes more sense.

London clubs amuse me, not one bagged the name London. :confused:

Yes a very good shout, isn't St Johnstone in Perth? Aston Villa is in Aston but where did the Villa come from? What has the North End got to do with Preston? etc; etc;

You've beaten me there mate, once again a very good post.

Just a guess, but wasn't London actually just the square mile? Tottenham play in Tottenham, Fulham play in Fulham, Arsenal is named after the actual old arsenal, even Wimbledon played in Wimbledon.

Since there was already a football club named Fulham in the borough, the founders decided to adopt the name of the adjacent borough of Chelsea for the new club, having rejected names such as Kensington FC, Stamford Bridge FC and London FC.

Mad eh considering West London is well out of the way, compared to some of the club's.
