boboskins Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Have to disagree here, just got back from Australia and when ever I spoke to the convicts about sport and they asked where I was from the first team they mentioned was United but then recalled Wednesday and several matchs the Owls have played in the all be it distant future ( cup finals ect ecet ect ) when I told them I was Wednesday. Personally I put itdown to the better run the blades have had in the past 10 years and basically the higher profile they've attained of the two teams in the city. Sad but true. Let me know when I can expect these cup finals in the distant future, i'll look forward to em
sheff71 Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Wednesday are known world wide because of what happened with the disaster, horrible but true. There's a lot in that - you're more famous for your ground than the club unfortunately. If you'd asked the original question 10 years ago, there's no question most would say the Owls at the time. I'd certainly say it's more in United's favour now (with a higher profile through the failed playoff finals, good cup runs, the Tevez affair, linked with better players (eg Beattie) and being the better team for the last 10 years). It would only take a few years of Owls back above the blades in the leagues to change this though... or at least a decent cup run!
Snook Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Although I'm a Blade I still think Wednesday are the more famous team at the moment. It probably also depends on where you are in the world, but in this country I would say that for anyone over 25 Wednesday are the more famous club for all their years in the top flight and the cup finals.
MR BENN Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 i have to be honest and admit that the Tevez farse has given the blades publicity worldwide ,positive and negative .but for events on the field ,which is what clubs should be known for ,i think Wednesday are better known throughout the world
skeggymart Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 ,i think Wednesday are better known throughout the world Especially fot the most disgracefull saga in british football.eg bent players.

For both of us we're better known for off-pitch issues.
crookesey Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Say what you will, Sheffield Wednesday has the most unique name in British league football. Of course it is the first to come to mind when Sheffield is mentioned in far flung places.
kenny.gray Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 can anyone say either side are big club,to me a big club as to be in the premiership, also as to be competing for major cups each season.utd. and weds. are only consided big by there past history and the fact the first club came from sheffield.when you are a supporter of our clubs you have to clutch at straws that you may get promoted, and maybe have a good f.a.cup run.the premiership is the only place to be and then having the resources to stay there for more than one season, only then will we be among the big clubs.
