EmilyM Â Â 10 #2 Posted June 16, 2009 I know its a bit further away, but I have had a few Syrian hamsters from Wentworth Garden Centre and they have all been friendly, they must tame them as babies. Rats make good pets. Despite many people's dislike of them, they are one of the friendliest small pets you can have. I had an albino rat (from Middletons at the bottom of the Moor) and she was really friendly, loved to snuggle next to me and "purr". They don't take much upkeep, just feeding and cleaning their cage. BasilRathbon   10 #6 Posted June 16, 2009 How about a Bengal Tiger, I saw one for sale other days at Pets at Home it was £15 although not sure what kind of basket they would need  What a ridiculous suggestion! Have you any idea how dangerous Bengal tigers can be?  Best get a lovely black panther instead. The black coat means they're easier to keep clean and they're so fast you can send them on shopping errands and they'll be back far quicker than a tiger. poppypoppy   10 #7 Posted June 16, 2009 Yep have to second that what emilym said about rats...over the years we have had..syrian hamsters..dwarf hamsters..gerbils..mice..rats..guinea pigs..budgies..cats..fish...and the best by far..apart from my now beautiful cats..is the rats...we've also had albino rats...and devon rex rats too....they never ever bite..theyre very intelligent..and dont smell..!! My advice would be steer clear of dwarf hamsters...we found these to be the most vicious and nasty little things...lol...and you wouldnt think so with the size of them...lol...if I had the room I'd love some more rats...they really are beautiful..think wot puts people off is the name 'rat'..but remember these arent the wild variety.... but good luck deciding...oh and another thing to remember...rats are meat eaters...whereas hamsters arent...not important just different food thats all... hels1977   10 #8 Posted June 16, 2009 Rats do make lovely pets but please don't go to a pet shop, especially at teh moment. There's a very nasty, highly contagious virus doing the rounds (again) - SDA http://www.rmca.org/Articles/sda.htm  Please go to a breeder or rescue place where you KNOW the animals are quarantined and they will not home to you unless they are as sure as they can be that no infections have been introduced - something pet shops just don't do. In addition if you home from a breeder or rescue (for ANY animal) you should get a life time of support and help and if your circumstances change your beloved pet won't be another stastic in a rescue.  Rats aren't that cheap to keep - they may be cheap to buy, but vet bills from respiratory infections and lumps can be high. Just so you know. That said - they are very rewarding. Take a look at http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community for more information. BasilRathbon   10 #10 Posted June 16, 2009 Why not call at your local hostel and see if there's any homeless people on their books willing to be kept as a pet? Not only will this improve government statistics, it will also ensure they get well fed and have a roof over their heads. With so many unwanted people being dumped on the streets daily, it's the least you can do.
 Share this content via...
Lotti   10 #11 Posted June 16, 2009 No good pet shop sells animals imo.  It doesn't matter what they tell you about where they have come from - a pet should not be sold from a shop they don't get the right food (you lose money if you feed good food while you keep them in your shop), they are kept in inadequate conditions and don't have the socialisation or handling they require.  I have two russian dwarf hamsters who are great. One's very low maintenance whilst the other is very eager for attention and whilst he's low maintenance compared to my dogs he requires at least half an hour of handling each day and doesn't like going back in his cage!!  Good luck and if you need help looking, please feel free to ask.
