Smack Jack Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Somethings eating them so I figured it must have been greenfly. I tend to spray them in the evening and water in the day at the minute, I'll move both to after sundown. The Chillis seem to be doing well as do the strawberries but there are tinges of yellow all over the tomatoes now - hoping it passes

Greenfly dont usually eat the plant, they suck from the leaves and stem and excrete honey dew (a sticky substance) if it is aphids/greenfly you will see them on the underneath of leaves (there very small though) usually white/green/black and very slow moving. Other things that could get in are catipillars? One more thing it could possibly be is red spider mite, these are very small red spiders?
Smack Jack Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 perhaps it comes back to conditions, there are a few holes in the leaves but mainly its white spots everywhere - as I cant actually see any insects. There are sometimes some tiny little things I find that look like little black lady birds though, would they be aphids

Dark Moomin Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Could it be mildew related? My mum did tell me to be careful cos I have mine in a plastic greenhouse that if they get too hot and damp then mildew could be a problem. She said that this could manifest as yellow on the leaves?

Possibly, or the onset of some infection like blight. It depends how the new growth is.
Smack Jack Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I think they will be aphids then they are that tiny. Mildew is not something I had thought about but could be it, they are watered and it gets hot up there - really hot. The house isnt damp though. I think I will persist with leaving the window open and start watering them in the evening and stick to every evening and hope they come on well

Bonjon Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 ive had problems we something eatin my plants lost bout 20,mine are only in pots round the garden, wats best way to grow toms i no idea ? The best way is in post, but if they are out in the garden that will be your problem, lots of slugs, and also the temp. outside at night wont be helping. Toms prefer a warmer climate(most of them anyway) like in a greenhouse. Morrisons sell flower buckets that are the perfect size fore pots for a tom plant.
