Tradescanthia
Anyone reading some of my recent posts will have seen that my life expectancy is seriously impaired due to cancer. I plan to return to work shortly, but only on a part time basis as I am not fit enough to work full time. Would it be reasonable to ask my employer to allow me extra holidays so I can enjoy whatever time I have left and my wife and I can go abroad a few weeks a year extra while I am still fit and able to travel. I do not expect to be paid for the extra holidays, I would just be gratefull to be able to take them. Do you think I am being reasonable? You may think 'well you get more holidays next year', but in my case there may not be a 'next year'.
HeadingNorth
Might you be better looking for a post of the type where the work is every other week? Something along those lines. I don't think your request in unreasonable, but if an employer must obtain a replacement for you every time you take some extra unpaid leave, it may put him/her under unreasonable efforts to grant it. Trouble is who is going to offer employment to someone with 'the big C' on their record? I already have a job being kept open for me under the disablement discrimination act and I want to play fair when I go back and do whatever I am capable of. It's just that I want to get as good a quality of life as I can possibly get.

Bonny
It's not unreasonable to ask for unpaid leave - parents are entitled to it so why not someone in your position? Obviously if you work for a large organisation it would be easier to cover your work/job. I would have thought the vast majority of employers would be sympathetic to your needs to balance working with making the most of the time you have left. No harm in asking anyway is there? tweetypie
I would ask, i do not think that this is an unreasonable request. I know that many company's are will to do this, many offer unpaid leave for employees to travel or work abroad etc. I think you really need to do this to spend as much time with your family and friends-enjoy life while you can. I really do help that it is possible for you take the time off work that you need.
custardy
Where I used to work you just needed to put a request in writing and it would be considered. As you say you are not asking to be paid for the extra holidays. There were quite a few people who did a gradual return to work after illness. It helps both you and the employer. Good Luck with this. Keep us posted.
Cyclone
Anyone can reasonably ask for unpaid leave, in your position your employers would have to be very callous to refuse you.
