Concerts   10 #1 Posted June 5, 2009 (edited) Monday 08 June 19:30, Sheffield Cathedral Sheffield University and Cathedral Summer Festival   Sheffield University Chamber Choir Nigel Simeone (conductor) Professor Simon Keefe (speaker)  Sheffield University Chamber Choir and Orchestra perform Mozart's devastatingly sublime requiem, up there with the greatest choral works of all time. This will be accompanied by a talk with leading Mozart scholar, Professor Simon Keefe.  Mozart´s Requiem, left incomplete at the composer´s death in December 1791, has always held an extremely prominent place in our collective musical consciousness. This talk will focus not only on Mozart´s contributions, but also on Franz Xaver Suessmayr's completion of the work in early 1792. Long subjected to serious criticism, Suessmayr´s completion was positively received in the early decades of the nineteenth century (after first publication in 1800), thus inviting modern-day re-evaluation of it in light of historically-based aesthetic criteria.  Simon Keefe took up the James Rossiter Hoyle Chair of Music (and the position as Head of Department) in April 2008, having previously been Professor and Head of Music at City University London. In 2005, Simon was elected to life membership of the Salzburg-based Akademie für Mozart-Forschung of the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum (as the only British member). He has published six books as author or editor since 2001, and is widely acknowledged as leading authority on Mozart and 18th Century music.  Tickets: £8, £5 (concessions) £3 (students/unwaged)  For further information on this concert and to find out how to purchase tickets, please see www.musicandartsfestival.co.uk Edited June 5, 2009 by Concerts Venue ommitted.
