Lyceum 10 #3 Posted June 11, 2009 Four-star review in today's Metro: Brief Encounter **** Love is so terribly painful, it's a wonder we bother. It's a sentiment captured by David Lean's 1945 weepie, which charts the doomed affair of upper-class travellers Laura Jesson and Dr Alec Harvey. Kneehigh portrays the sorrow that only affairs of the heart can create, but it also gets across the unfettered joy of romance without resorting to sentimentality. Alongside the fraught goings-on of Laura (a perfectly uptight Hannah Yelland) and Alex (Milo Twomey), is the tentative young love of dippy waitress Beryl (an excellent Beverley Rudd) and refreshment vendor Stanley (Christopher Price) and the nicely naughty relationship between affable porter Albert (Jospeh Alessi) and battleaxe café manager Myrtle Bagot (Annette McLaughlin). No theatre company does magic quite like Kneehigh. This is a gentler production than some previous offerings, but the touches that make Kneehigh so special are present in spades, from inventive comic moments to clever film work. The heart-stopping nature of falling in love is presented through crashing waves, gorgeous music, swinging from chandeliers and sudden gusts of wind. And it makes you remember why we bother.
