syne   10 #121 Posted July 17, 2009 quote from skyscraper forums  "Interestingly, of my friends who weren't brought up in Sheffield but have lived here a long time they've all said they'll head up on the wheel.  Most of my friends from Sheffield have said its rubbish.  Does strike me as yet more Sheffieldforum-ism.  (personally, I like it and I'm forged and raised in Sheffield) "  love the 'Sheffieldforumismm' twin of 'mardy bum' methinks
 Share this content via...
dazzler4 Â Â 10 #122 Posted July 17, 2009 i saw that on there too! its not just the wheel they all moan about, its regeneration and the city developing in general!!
 Share this content via...
WhiteHawk   10 #123 Posted July 17, 2009 what planet you from the wheel is 200ft high how high is yorkshire bank certainly not 200 ft http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=880760&page=4 that pic is quarter up and it dwarfs the yorkshire bank and every other building near by apart from the st pauls tower  Sorry I meant the centre of it is about as high as the surrounding buildings. There is absolutely no way the centre point on that frame is 100 feet up. Unless of course they've moved it since Tuesday. When I walked past it, the centre point wasn't very high up at all, certainly didn't seem it anyway.  I'm not happy at the amount of space its taking up for next weeks continental market, where are the stalls going to go that normally pitch at the top of fargate? Pauline BHG   10 #124 Posted July 17, 2009 I can see it from the Uni ! It's huge !  £6.50 though ??? I won't be paying that. Ho hum...
 Share this content via...
Glennis   15 #125 Posted July 17, 2009 I can't see the point in it, it's in a terrible location. It's now the 4th reason for me to avoid fargate.  I also think its badly located, its so huge and dominates the area. Where are they going to put the continental market? algy   11 #126 Posted July 17, 2009 At last!!!!! im not the only one that thinks the wheel is a good idea, so many moaners on here, what does everyone want ?? back to the eighties? grey dirty buildings, the hole in the road and the egg box?!  Not at all. I think the improvements in the city centre are great, but in this instance I happen to think it's a bad idea, unsuited to where it's been placed. The Council's idea is to attract people to Sheffield, but I don't think it will. The shops in Fargate are mostly concerned that people will be put off shopping there rather than attracting extra business. Sheffield Council have a track record of carrying out excellent developments then ruining them. The Moor was the classic example. It was an upmarket shopping area. They then turned it into a very attractive pedestrian precinct making it even more attractive. Then they slapped the market in the middle and it nosedived. The competition from Meadowhall was just the last nail in the coffin.
 Share this content via...
Skink   10 #127 Posted July 17, 2009 (edited) ok, so a few people think its a bad idea, which is fine - you can never please all the people all the time  what alternatives could these unhappy people suggest ?  If you were looking for an attraction that would get people talking about Sheffield, coming to Sheffield and caring about Sheffield  Me ? reckon I wont be going on it at that price, but it is an interesting thing of itself - and so big, where else could you put it except maybe the Centre for Popular music car park to get a better view fo the flats  My alternative ? somethng that related to the heritage and history of Sheffield. Maybe a giant blacksmiths convention? or flood the Wicker put 10,000 tonnes of sand outside Castle Market and have a beach party . . . Parapou   10 #128 Posted July 17, 2009 There will be a charity chugger in each pod, and you will be stuck with them all the way round.  (If we still had the Socialist Worker sellers (what happened to them?) I could have said you'd be stuck with them until the revolution is over.)
 Share this content via...
MrSkinner   10 #129 Posted July 17, 2009 "Hmmm... so you dislike the charity people. Collecting money. For charity. Like save the childen, unicef, help the aged, oxfam. Volunteering and all that. ok."  You do know the ones with clipboards get paid a wage don't you? That's why I refuse to give them anything, anyone collecting for charity should be doing it FOR FREE. Why should I pledge my wages to a charity to pay someone else's wages? Hate them.  Don't mind the ones with the buckets - these are generally collected on free will. Good on em.  Oh and I think the wheel is cool Shame it'll cost so much!!
 Share this content via...
mogwai84 Â Â 10 #130 Posted July 17, 2009 Hmmm... so you dislike the charity people. Collecting money. For charity. Like save the childen, unicef, help the aged, oxfam. Volunteering and all that. ok. Â don't they get paid on a commission basis? Â I'm all for supporting charities, I'd just rather 100% of my donations went to the charity. Â Â however back on topic, I think the wheel is going to be great... it's flipping huge!
 Share this content via...
GoGo_dancer   10 #131 Posted July 17, 2009 I think it looks pretty cool, and it's right outside my office window so I get a great view of the whole thing as it's being built! Although I think just for laughs I'm going to get some flourescent cardboard and cut out big letters to make rude comments in the window for people to read while they're on it....  Like '£6.50? You woz robbed!'
 Share this content via...
