souldriver Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Any one know what the the old platforms once where in the sheffield area? I have noticed these when on the train between rotherham and meadowhall, and also between meadowhall and sheffield. thanks.
HeadingNorth Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 According to my old rail maps, there used to be stations at Attercliffe Road (?) and Brightside. The Brightside station is still there, I think - at least, some station is still there, about 100 yards down the line from Meadowhall. I imagine it closed when M'hall station opened.
souldriver Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 Cheers i think one i have seen when the train has avoided rotherham for some faliure / reason, is the old mosborogh / rotherham station. i was just intersted to know what they where i never really paid much notice before. edit - just looked on wikipedia, and the one i noticed after m'hall appears to be brightside from the photograph
foxydebs Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 the one between rotherham and meadowhall is the old masborough station which was the station for rotherham before rotherham central. Masborough runs behind the old football ground. Brightside is the one just down from meadowhall on the way to town.
fozzybear210 Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Is there easy access to these stations as I wouldn't mind exploring them?
Plain Talker Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 There were also stations at Heeley, and at Millhouses, going out toward Chesterfield (before you got to "Dore and Totley") and on the route that goes out past Hillsborough, there was Wadsley Bridge and Deepcar.
goldenfleece Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 back in 1985 I was obssessed with old railways, and explored every site in Sheffield. Got a full library of old pix somewhere. The old station house at Milhouses was still standing then, it was very spooky. So was the one at Beauchief too. I explored Wadsley bridge, Sheffield Victoria, Neepsend/bridgehouses, all the sites up to Outybridge, and many others. It was a great couple of weeks... Most of the sites have been trashed now, the old station houses at millhouses and Beauchief are gone....but Victoria station was amazing....it was still more or less intact in 1985....all the platforms still there, I think one or 2 tracks still left for freight, all the buildings were still up, you could get up the 2nd floors in most, and many were still part furnished with stuff left when it closed in 1970. It was a real time warp.......wanted to go back and make a film there 10 years later, but it was all gone, and nothing left..... I explored Rotherham central when it was derelict in 1985, and the masborough one was the only Rotherham station open. Odd they then switched them over and closed the open one and re-opened the shut one.....the lines go the same places more or less........not sure if Masbourough station is standing any more.... Also explored Brightside station, in 1985 that was still on the timetable and was just a bare platform with trains to York stopping there. No idea if it is still there.....
Agent Orange Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Is there easy access to these stations as I wouldn't mind exploring them? I think they are all fenced off and getting to them would amount to tresspassing. There is little to see now apart from the disused platforms.
happyhippy Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Brightside and Attercliffe Road shut in 1993. Only Dore and Darnall exist as live stations in the suburbs (Chapeltown isn't really Sheffield!). There is no access for the public at Brightside or Attercliffe Road, and were in a pretty distressed state when they were shut down anyway.
Strix Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Ahem! If Darnall gets a mention as an existing suburban station, Woodhouse should too Woodhouse has been refurbished in recent years, much to the surprise of many residents who didn't know they were living so close to an operating train station!
