jad279 Â Â 11 #5497 Posted April 16, 2013 Seeing that map showing the asylum took me back to the days when as a small boy i would walk down past the Hooker and walk down to Carlisle St to meet my dad coming out of the steelworks .My Grand parents liver on Carlisle St i can just remember a couple of houses still standing and how if i climbed over there wall i could play amongst all these funney bits of wood that turned out to be casting cores. All this from just looking at an old map. Â ---------- Post added 16-04-2013 at 19:17 ---------- Â By, those were the days my friends when you could rely on the trams, are you in this picture, three people upstairs at front one looks like me. Â Just for fun, this tram on upwell st is making its way to page hall, but where was the first stop after it came from under the Bridge. http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv309/brian1941/Upwellst-2-_zpsb8343320.jpg Seeing the tram going under Upwell St bridge reminds me of when it used to flood and you had to get across by climbing allong the railings. Do you remember when a crossing was first put in. It was the side of Ibbersons shop. I know because I croose from Lemm's to go home and a policeman followed me home and told my mum and me that I should have used the new crossing, My mum gave him an earful, telling him that I would have two cross two other dangerous roads to cross the across the crossing. not long after that the crossing was moved to outside Lemms. Can anyone remember who Dr. Willie knocked down on that crossing.  ---------- Post added 17-04-2013 at 08:05 ----------   You are right, there was a stop pposite the gasworks, the next stop was opposite, Belks, about where the crossing is now. The biggest bonfire I've ever seen. ----------------- Hello Ralph How you doing, to be honest although i was working at Firth Browns on shift work i can't remember much about that fire. ----------- The one that stands in my mind even to this day was the fire next To the Alexander pub on Carlisle rd. I remember living in Hunsley st and kids shouting FIRE down road, i and my neighbours rushed down, Christ you could hardly see the Crown pub for the smoke ( pity loved to had called in.) :hihi:. The fire was to believe at number 2/3 Mechine shop, they had outside contractors in the firm during August weeks shut down, was said some cloth or an Electrical fault that set the fire off. They could be another story to it, not quite sure of date that year.
