brian1941 Â Â 11 #6073 Posted November 6, 2013 Hi Brian, not sure when the houses on Whiteways were built, but the 'new houses' on Earl Marshall Rd were built when I was at Owler Lane Infants School, 1957'ish. We used to go and play on the building site at lunch times, and got into trouble when we went back to school after diner time, late of course, because we were covered in mud, then when I got home, in trouble from my mum. --------------- Hiya George, I bet you were a right mischief - Hmm. Me and my friends use to climb to top and walk round scaffolding, at w/ends. Can you remember the first lot of houses on corner of Earl Marshall rd thats when we started playing on them buildings, they had lots of fancy railings round the house. It was end house going up that drive to whiteways.
 Share this content via...

Gemini2 Â Â 10 #6081 Posted November 9, 2013 Hi all, Just been bowsing through the different subjects and came across one Sheffield from the air. There are a few photos of Grimesthorpe Gas Works, and the is no road over to the station and the school (I presume the one by the traffic lights junction of Jenkin Road is on Rose Hill(?). The photos were taken in the 1920s. I know my dad always called the top of Holywell Road the new road. It also name the farm as Grange, That is if I got the orentation right. There are allotments where Readymix was.
 Share this content via...

Yes Pigeon it was Cookies Farm I used to go there and feed the chickens and pigs in the farm yard and we occasionally rode bare back on the old farm horse. We also used to go caroling at Christmas and were invited into the kitchen to sit by the fire in the Inglenook Fireplace to warm up eating mince pies and drinking hot milk
 Share this content via...
clydesdale   10 #6084 Posted November 10, 2013 The location of The Sheffield and Rotherham Licensed Victuallers Association asylum is shown on the next maps. It was not an asylum for the insane but a place for Association members to spend their retirement in comfort and safety. The buildings became known as Alms Houses and in 1879 the residents moved to new premises on Abbydale Road South. The Alms Houses were absorbed into Grimesthorpe's housing as industrialisation expanded and became Nos. 11 to 17 Lincoln Place. They were demolished about 1967.  http://s20.postimg.org/nin2oa8x9/P1000269.jpg  http://s20.postimg.org/hk99e1pyl/P1000271.jpg  to cat631,hi there just been reading your info on Bland st.thank you for the maps. Also would like to say hi to peterr? &fishcake&.I was born at 16,bland st, in 1936 and i'm one of the suter clan, now in canada, cheers clydesdale.
