Sweatshopboy   11 #25 Posted March 17, 2009 My cousin sent me some speedway memorabillia yesterday and in a Speedway pulication dated September 4 1964 it says "An Exchange of blows between Oxford's John Bishop and Norwich's Sandor Levai in Front of 3,ooo spectators after they had both crashed into the safety fence during the last race of the evening at Oxford on Thursday was not the only display of temprement. Levai scored 0, I remember him as a hard rider in fact dirty would not be inapropiate and if memory serves he was knocking on a bit when he started in British Speedway. PAL215 Â Â 10 #28 Posted March 19, 2009 My memories of the Tigers all come from the late sixties early seventies when my boyhood heroes were Doug Wyer, Reg Wilson and my particular favourite Jim Airey. I recall one evening when Belle Vue were the visitors when Jim was involved in a monumental tussle with Ivan Mauger (must have been a bit of the Aussie v Kiwi rivalry thing going on). If my memory serves me correctly Jim came out on top which elevated him to God like status in my eyes. Of the visiting riders I always like to watch Ole Olsen, don't know why maybe it was his style of riding.
 Share this content via...

CHAIRBOY Â Â 10 #30 Posted March 19, 2009 Does anyone remember the "Silver Sash" ? Â Yes, It was the Provincial League equivalent of The Golden Helmet of the National League. The holder would defend it against the top scorer of their opponents in a three-way match race, after the team fixture had concluded. soft ayperth   11 #31 Posted March 19, 2009 I doubt there'll be many who can go as far back as I. I went to the Sheffield Speedway once. Late 40s, 1950 at latest. In the days of the great Jack Parker who captained the Manchester team. Can't remember who the Sheffield team were playing against but I remember they lost. CHAIRBOY   10 #34 Posted March 19, 2009 Just checked out one of my favourites in that list - Soren Sjosten - whom I looked up and learned he had died ten years ago. Where does time go? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%B6ren_Sj%C3%B6sten  Another Belle Vue rider Tommy Roper, was another Aces's rider who gave solid service to Sheffield and to Halifax.
