driver1 Â Â 10 #1 Posted March 12, 2009 Apologies, I assume this question has been answered previously but cannot trace any info. Has there ever been a public house on the triangle of land twixt Spital Hill/Carlisle St/Spital St, adjacent to the East House. Any info gratefully recieved, as usual beer rests on the outcome. Thanks in anticipation
 Share this content via...
pitsmoorboy   17 #2 Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) Yes I believe there was pub called the Midland Hotel. some years  back. http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl Edited March 12, 2009 by pitsmoorboy
 Share this content via...
cat631 Â Â 10 #3 Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) On this 1903 map there is only one pub shown in the triangle, it's on the corner and marked PH. I thought this was The East House but having looked at Pitsmoorboy's post, it is The Midland. The East House being at the top of Spital Street, immediately above the numbers 192 on the map. It's not shown on this map so the building was perhaps converted to a pub at a later date. Edited March 12, 2009 by cat631
 Share this content via...
Strix   11 #4 Posted March 12, 2009 Yes I believe there was pub called the Midland Hotel. some years  back. http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl Is this the pic you were trying to link to?: http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s14106  I'm slightly confused. This pic is from the 1960's, but there is another more modern one which shows a pair of gate posts in this location which belonged to the station goods yard http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=a00179  can anybody clear that up? cat631 Â Â 10 #5 Posted March 12, 2009 Hello Strix. I think the second picture you posted is at the junction of Spital Hill and Savile Street. This is The East House http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s22079.jpg
 Share this content via...
JenC Â Â 10 #6 Posted March 12, 2009 Strix, those are two different locations. The second, more modern photograph is the area as you've just gone through the Wicker Arches (junction of Spital St and Saville St) , whereas the first picture is a bit further up the hill (junction of Spital St and Carlisle St). Â Â edit: ah, didn't see cat631's reply.
 Share this content via...

lakerman   16 #8 Posted March 12, 2009 The Midland was definitely on the triangle, just a few yards below The East House.
 Share this content via...
PopT Â Â 10 #9 Posted March 12, 2009 According to my records The Midland was on Spital Hill, almost on the corner of Spital Hill and Carlisle Street. Â East House is on the corner of Spital Street and Spital Hill (Burngreave side) Â Hope this helps. Â PopT
 Share this content via...
